Hi all

Just been quoted £850 for a warranty via Warranties Direct.

Mine is an 08 RR V8 with 56k on the clock.

I'm dubious about warranties but also concerned about the 'what if...' Of not having one.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated....either on warranties on the whole OR Warranties Direct.

It's like any insurance - they are making money - so on average they are paying out less than they are charging.

Some people will win & save on a big bill, but more will pay the premuim and claim little or nothing.

So it all depends - do you feel lucky ?

Im in a similar position, im looking to buy but dont know whether to spend circa £800 on a warranty or put it towards my budget. IE dealer prices with a some sort of warranty???????

I can't speak to specific UK warranties, but I researched North American ones before getting my MY08 ffrr. Generally the warranties offered were expensive, covered little, had many nasty clauses in the small print and many, many upset customers. I decided NOT to get one. Only time will tell if I was right, but I can take my car to any shop I want and have no middlemen to deal with.

If you're thinking strongly about getting one, research the policy and the company carefully. As a previous poster remarked, paying out more than they charge is not a sustainable business model.

i took an aftermarket warranty on my Disco3, after a lot of research into reasons why there is such a negative perception of the warranty companies. I found that complaints arose from:

- vehicle salespeople misinforming customers as to what the warranty covers
- customers expecting the warranty to cover all breakages on the vehicle, including service items such as brake pads, etc
- customers not maintaining and servicing their vehicles in accordance with the terms and conditions of the warranty

within 1 month of taking it the warranty i submitted a claim which was for 70% of the amount i paid for the warranty - no quibbles

will i do it again - yes definitely as i am in the process of getting one for the ffrr

My LR Used Car Warranty (for over 5 yo cars), has paid out a good £2k plus 2 weeks of hire car. The previous owner had a £2k Turbo......so my view is yes to a LR one. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

I got 6 months Land Rover select warranty, when i bought my car. I also chose to extend it for a further 12 months. I believe they will cover your car up to 100k miles.
I've had a suspension arm and an Air Con condenser replaced on the policy.
The two jobs were handled exceptionally well by my local dealer, no fuss, no problems.
In fact they diagnosed and fitted the suspension arm in one visit (1.5 hours).
I am seriously considering renewing it when it expires. I believe it's £749 for the year. Including Roadside Assistance and MOT cover.

We don't have the JLR warranty option here, at least in my case. I would be more comfortable with that than a third party one.

They are not there to help you.
Remember, if they can wriggle out of any claim on a technicality they will, because it means more profit.
I doubt the staff working there get a bonus for paying out as much as possible and providing cracking customer satisfaction.

When my FFRR ran out of main dealer warranty at 3 years old I took out an extended one WITH THE DEALER, but it was not a Land Rover one and when I needed help they charged me for the diagnostic charge as that wasn't covered.

Never again!

OP, we had a warranties direct one on a company Ford Galaxy.
Wiper linkage failed at 4 years, 16k miles. Refused due to a wear and tear item. WTF!
It wasn't the wiper or the motor.

After two months or arguing they paid.
Seems typical as fobbing you off means more money for them. You have to argue a lot of the times.

I just put the money to one side now and look after the car.
I'm not funding their profits.

In summary, insurance is simply no more than making a bet. That said, I purchased an extended warranty on our 2006 RR Sport and it has more than paid for itself. A new rear differential, new compressor for the leveling mechanism and a handful of other items.

I also have an extended warranty on a 2008 Jaguar XK, they replaced the entire leather dash, which would have cost close to $6K in parts and labor, another win.

We have a 2012 FFRR, just purchased, and I will look for an extended warranty when the factory is ready to expire. An interesting side note on the 2012, I couldn't find any aftermarket that offered a warranty at this time! This tells me that the underwriters are "black listing" this vehicle as a bad bet!?

If you have the money available for a warranty, I would recommend to go for it. It helps you sleep well... 2012 Range Rover HSE LUX

I was very skeptical but took out a warranty lite with warranty direct, for about £100
it covers major items but only if you breakdown.
Anyway I did and ended up with a Payout of over half the repair cost. (£1600)
However I did have to cross T's and dot I's and got the impression they were wiggling over paying so will probably renew with them but expecting a massive premium hike. Mine was a blue one!

As said its a bet in favour of the Warranty Company however like Medical Insurance it helps you sleep at night (as has also been said). I recommend it along with at least one glass of red per night (also helps you sleep)

I was told to steer well clear of Warranty Direct. They quoted me the same.£850
I went for the Land Rover Warranty.
You have to have your inspected at a dealership £60 if they find anything wrong with it you have to pay for it to be fixed. They will then give you a full warranty for all mechanical parts.
The only thing they don't cover is water ingress and the sound system.

Mine was £1080 i think.

At least with the Land rover warranty you can ring customer services and kick up a fuss if you have a problem.
