United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Zermatt Silver
Ignition key turns but no starter engagement

Has anyone got any ideas about the following problem that my car has.
It's a 2005 Vogue that, at random times, with full steady indicator lights on the dash board the ignition key turns but there is no starter engagement. This originally was diagnosed as a starter motor problem so it was replaced. The same thing happened again with the new starter motor & this was put down to being unlucky and having another dodgy starter motor so this too was also replaced.....guess what, it's still doing it with the third starter motor.
The battery has also been replaced and is fully charged and the terminals are tight. When the key is turned and it doesn't start, there are no audible clicks or any other sounds from the starter.
This problem doesn't often manifest itself and the car will often run normally for weeks before it just won't start.
Strangely, if I leave the car for approximately 40 minutes it will then start normally.
Has anyone had any experience of these problems or have any good ideas? Confused

Sounds like a dodgy ignition barrel to me. Confused The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I'd be inclined to agree altho my opinion is not technically based just from logic.

The main components are ignition barrel, wiring, battery, starter motor, engine. If you have replaced the start and battery and the replacement are proven to work, go for the ignition barrel or loose wiring maybe?

I once had an Oil Pressure switch go in my Land Rover, replaced it, got the same fault, replaced it AGAIN, fault fixed! Even a brand new part can be faulty. Discovery 4 HSE

Thank you both for your very prompt replies.
It does sound logical that replacing the ignition barrel could be the answer. Why it should start after a 40 minute rest though is beyond me!

Maybe it's an ECU software issue then? The systems not readying in time? Discovery 4 HSE

this exact same thing happened with one of mine. Turned out the battery connection was loose. Doh!

Worth double checking your battery cabling and earth though....

Hello all new member here, I have been a spectator for a while and I thought I might be able to help with this problem,

I have the same problem with the ignition on my 2005 Vogue,
I found that when the starter does not work when I turn the ignition key if I wiggle the gear lever about while the gearbox is in the park position the car will then start,
I think it maybe something to do with the switch that allows the car only to be started in the park or neutral position, the switch or mechanism could be faulty.

I have had this problem intermittently for around eight months and not had time to have it looked at yet, it seems to happen more when it is raining or wet

Nice one Nick, something we hadn't thought off. In the L322 its most likely to be electronic rather than mechanical. Discovery 4 HSE
