Potential First FF Purchase - advice/info appreciated !!

I'm currently the owner of a RRS TDV8, but am in the process of "upgrading" to a FF. I've seen a car I quite like - a 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE, however have a couple of questions that I'm hoping someone on here can help with:

Do they come with a tow bar and electrics as standard ? If not, what should I be looking for to know whether this car has got the attachments as it didn't have an obvious tow bar fitting at the rear when I looked (at least not in the way my RRS does).

Secondly, it's a 56 plate car and has a BMW style key - when did they change to the current "flip" style key ? Can you upgrade to this new style of key ?

Finally, any hints/tips on what to look for on the car would be appreciated. Cosmetically, it's very clean and isn't showing its mileage at all, but it's the mechanicals/electrics I'm worrying about - don't want any nasty/expensive surprises Laughing

Cheers in advance Thumbs Up

Richard

Welcome to the forum.

Tow bars and electrics are not standard, Though are often added. There are a couple of different types removable and not. Obviously the non removable ones will be obvious, but if you look at the middle under the rear bumper and see a square hole around 2" then you have the removable type bracket fitted, the tow bar is often stored in the right had boot recess.

If you havent got anything fitted, then it would be worth phoning LR customer services with your VIN they can email you the build sheet for it and you can see if it had the towbar pack.

There are after market tow bars that arent too expensive. But i would not risk using after market electronics.

I was under the impression that all tdv8's had the flip key but someone in the know could probably help more.

Have a look through the wiki, there is a wealth of info on there. Thumbs Up

Good point on the VIN - I will get hold of that tomorrow and get the build sheet to see whether the tow bar and electrics have been fitted.

Be good to know whether it should have the flip key or not - as it is a 56 plate, 07 model I would have thought it should have done ?

I have a 56 plate TDV8 VSE it has the BMW style key, not sure when they changed, think it was 2007 some time. LR will tell you that the flip key will not work, but I am sure there is a tread somwhere which details how to convert to a flip key.

If the vehcile does not have a towbar they are easy to fit, the LR electrics can be bought from Dan @ Duckworths 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Having done a little digging, I think that 07 was the cut over from the old style to the flip style keys - even though there are 56 plate, 07 model year cars around, they have the BMW style key. It seems that 07 plate, 07 model year cars onwards have the flip key. Well, you learn something new every day !!

The tow bars are readily available from most local fitters,

The OEM bar is a westfalia, they come in different types and it works as follows

1. there is a tow bar frame which bolts to the car this has the square reciever hole in for the two types of bar it and the electrics mounted on it.
2. there are two types of bar which will then attach to this:

Detachable (the receiver for this bolts into the above frame and remains on the car and the detachable neck clicks into it.
Farmers hitch, basically a flange type bar (which is also removable but a bit more fiddly)

All of the parts are westfalia branded as landrover, for general use the detachable is best imho as it can be taken off and comes with a cubby to store it in in the boot floor, as mentioned the landrover electrics are DEFINITELY best to go for as they are basically a plug in module, though it needs coding to work fully. A local indy did mine for £20.

As said dont bother with a quote from LR as its extortionate, get a local specialist to do it or a local indy will bolt it on if you supply the parts.

As far as they key goes, mine is a 57 plate and it has the flip style keys, so looks like a crossover on an 07ish plate. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Northern

I have installed 2 lots of electrics TD6 and TDV8 and both have been plug and play. Very Happy

There are 2 types of armatures, pre and post facelift. The differance is the exhaust mounts. You can fit a pre version onto a post, if you have access to a grinder Thumbs Up

So can someone give me a ballpark figure for retro-fitting a towbar and electrics to a 56 plate facelift model ? Is it a DIY-able job or does it need a specialist to sort out ?

DIY defo about 3 hours max I would say

Price depends on:
fixed or detachable
13pin or 12N/S electrics

Just give PF Jones a ring and they will price up the option you decide on.
