Having had a short break from Range Rovers I have decided to buy one with the option of exporting it to Oz at the end of the year.

I have already got my eye on one but it is currently under talks with Land Rover about a goodwill gesture for upgrading the front diff drive, as the recall programme has now expired.

Whilst waiting I have found a 53 plate black vogue however it has 155000 on the clock, the dealer sys that it is full service history and will provide 12 months MOT. Having looked at various buying guides apart from the obvious do you think that this is a good purchase at £7K.

For info it would cost me 6.5K in total including registration and import taxes making a total of £13.5K ( 20K Aus Dollars) and looking I cant find one for less than 30K over there.

I suppose in summary whilst we are all aware of gearbox woes, does the M62 engine keep going or am I going to be faced with more hassle than its worth.

The lump is solid tried and tested BMW lump

Thermostat replacement and maybe a new rad but other than that your good to go

The gear box on mine let go at 65000 but I know of other with 145000 with no issues I think it's luck of the draw

Given the cost of shipping, would it not be better to buy a higher value car? An S/C for example? Cost you an extra £5k to buy, but would presumably be worth a lot more in Oz.

I'd be gutted to buy a car then have to spend the same again in shipping and registration.

I have yet to go and see the vehicle, and was very curious as to whether the gearbox had been done.

Apart from airbags, compressor and the usual water leakage checks in the boot is there any age related checks i should look out for.

Also how will I know if the gearbox requires overhaul or is on its way out ?

I know it is a lot of money, but I think I would be more gutted getting there and my Range rover itch not going away and then having to pay £25k + for what seems like lots of HSE models and not a lot of Vogue specs upwards.
Don't forget on top of that the car could be 5000 miles away !!!

I was just curious as to whether these cars are holding the miles and years well!

i had a 05 with 132k miles and that went along sweetly and it did have a recon gearbox fitted at 116k miles so i would defo ask if the one you're looking at has had one...its all peace of mind really ... ... - .- -.

If you could stretch to a tdv8 then I would as diesel is about 80p there with petrol being about £1.2 iirc so the tdv8 would also be worth a lot more in the long run. I reckon one bought for under £20k would likely be worth nearly double that when all dues are paid and its on land with a full service history and good nick. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

With regards to importing cars into Australia, be sure to check the rules. . I think you need to have owned the car for a year otherwise you may be liable to pay GST (10%)? Not 100% sure but worth asking the Australian Tax Office (www.ato.gov.au)

Being an ex-pat, my friends and I were toying with the idea. My advice is buy the best spec you can and ship it over to maximise profit. I looked at it when I first bought my 56 plate TDV8. The car cost me £29k. Cheapest example I could find at the time was around the $120k (this was three years ago).

I was in Sydney over Christmas. There are a few more FFRR than there used to be when I was growing up but they are still the exception rather than the norm. Paul

For newz I can't find an age requirement but one requirement is that your prove its mpg... Its a drinker might be an option lol

I swapped my TD6 last spring for an 08 S/C for this very purpose and will be moving to OZ mid summer and according to my calculations it's only a couple of hundred more to import than a TD6 costing £7,000 here , and yes you must own for 12 months prior to importing and you can only bring one car in on the visa but I'm taking two as my wife is an expat OZ returning.
Big diseasels are becoming popular on large 4x 4x4 but petrol is so much cheeper than here and lets face it a lot nicer to drive plus to fill up you will have to go to the commercial pump at the back of the forecourt .

Try and find the money for a Supercharger you know it makes sense  2008 MY Supercharged
