exactly the paddles are there to use and far quicker than moving you hand off to a gear stick Far to many gone...

Nerd moment coming... I think they changed from a stick to a dial as the Dial is their own as it is also in the Jag but the stick is ex BMW so they probably arent allowed to use it any more.

I don't see the issue of the dial.

When I eventually change my 3.6 I shall see if I can afford to move to the 4.4TDV8, as I'm drawn to the better MPG from the 8 speed auto and lower revs. I shall still get JE to work their magic though.

If you need to use the manual gears then you use the paddles, seems simple enough to me. Discovery 4 HSE
