4.4 would be wonderful but with a budget at 28k I'd be waiting for quite a while I think. The 3.6 has never felt like too little motor so I'd be happy with another but I do like the interior/exterior upgrades on the facelift. I'm hoping to be able to get one at 28 grand in about 12 months but perhaps that's stretching it and 18 months is more likely.

Thanks for the offer on the Golf but am thinking a ten year old Mini Cooper for the giggle factor (plus the lady is excited at the prospect of something she can park!). £2500 gets a decent enough one. I cringe when I look at the mileage each time I add another thousand miles to the FF out so something I can cheerfully take up to 150k miles without worrying will be a relief. If it proves to not need too much spanner work ill keep it as well as the new FF, basically until its scrap. Lloyd Barnes

Ahh a mini d at that price will still have a psa diesel in it so should be reliable but oil services are critical and stick too half the schedule to make it last longer. If petrol then just watch the cats as some girls at work have had tem failing on theirs. Possibly speed bump related..

Don't get a pre 2004 mini. Gearboxes are a problem . They changed the gearbox design for the post 2004 models.

About 18mth ago I was in similar position and I ended up trading my v8 discovery 3 for BMW 520d. 3mths ago I traded that for the range rover. I just found that doing that much mileage meant it need to be a great cruiser. Doing 6/7 hurs driving in a day became a bit tiresome in the five because it wasn't as comfortable, plush capable etc.

I decided to take the slight hit on fuel/depreciation etc to drive a vehicle that I want to. If I look how much I've lost for two lots of trade in/margin I probablty should have just kept the disco!

Just saying beware of doing high miles in a car you don't really like

Done the same thing traded RR sport in for a 520d touring as the boss moaned about the fuel it was using on a 40mile daily commute to work sitting in the m8 car park every day.
Two years of moaning I gave in and bought another full fat tdv8 as she was only going to use it to go to the train station(2 miles a day) now change of job 80 mile a day commute offered to get an Audi tt tdi Quattro 50-60 mpg as opposed to 25mpg in the RR promptly told to f k off she likes comfort feels safer in the rr again and it's far better to tow the tin tent.
So will just need to pay the extra fuel which she feels is worth it, need to remind her it needs filled again. Gone

At least 50% of motive is fast tracking the upgrade to a facelift FF. the 12 months without a FF will be unpleasant but worth it hopefully as I really like the look of the 59+ models. Wifey is most upset which surprised me a little as I didn't realise she liked it as much as she clearly does. Might also remind me about the joy of FF ownership as you do get used to having one.

A Mini probably isn't he best choice but I've always fancied one and it will ease the pain a little.  Lloyd Barnes
