Just remember if you buy it as a Cat-D at Cat-D prices you will need to sell it as Cat-d at Cat-D prices. More depreciation with Cat-D than normal and harder to move along.

I had a CAT-D some years ago. They are fine as long as you have the repairs verified by someone you know/trust or you can sue if they get it wrong (AA or RAC etc)
AND.......
You are going to run it for ever.

Trying to sell them is a nightmare and you get nothing for them but if you are happy to run it until it does then happy days. Mine was a stolen/recovered Vauxhall Astra SXi Estate with glass and ignition lock damage. Cost me 600 quid to get it fixed up and I then ran it for 7 years as a working hack. Finally scrapped it with 316k on the clock when the engine let go.

If you think you might ever want to sell it though forget CAT-D completely. The amount of people willing to buy them is very small.

I'd say no problem, so long as the price is right. So many millions of cars have substantial repair work which is not recorded, and not reflected in the price.

Clearly Cat D will be more difficult to sell on, but not at the right price, if something is cheap enough somebody will always snap it up.

Always nice if you can find out exactly what was repaired, and in an ideal world you might have photos before the work was done.

I'd watch out for flood damaged, but don't these have a separate category? Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Hi so longs the car had been repaired to a high standard, there is not a issue.
I don't think you will lose a lot of money, it's all down to the buying price.
personally I would sooner buy one damaged and repair it myself, that way you know how bad the damage is and how good the repair is.
Just out of interest what car is it?
Ash

Please excuse my naivety here, but s this really worth it?

You buy a Cat D because it's cheap. You accept the car will probably be a pig to sell on and that you'll get correspondingly less for it.

Compare that to buying a 'normal' car that should be a doddle to sell on with less hassle. Unless, as mzplcg said, you're going to run it into the ground, will you actually be better off? Si. <This is my name.

It's got to be log book identity fraud. The unscrupulous scum will make a fortune out of it.

Ive been in the trade for far too long now and some Cat D and even C cars can be an absolute bargain, for example, a car stolen and later found with say no keys or even with keys will be a cat D if its been paid out on by the ins company, also something with panel damage is easily written off, remember Ins companies do not use 2nd hand parts or repair anything other than scratches on a panel, my mates R1 fell over or was kicked over and was write off, he rode it home !!!! Bought it back and fitted a new footrest and lever and carried on using it, it was written off because every fairing panel was scratched as was the exhaust and a tiny little scratch on the frame, £50 worth of bits and it was useable as a spare bike. Most people who deal in very light damaged cars take loads of pics to show how little damage they had. As they say in the trade 'buy it with your eyes'. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

Johnny is spot on, I've had two cars written off when people ran into the back of me. Neither of them needed any work doing whatsoever except for cosmetic purposes.

Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

hi guys ,

thanks for your input,

been driving a citroen berlingo for over 10 yrs, up and down the motorway now sick of vans,
especially when i can sit in the ffrr.
i have been offered a mini clubman at 50% less of trade value, and yes i will probably end up
driving it into the ground,
i am actually still 50/50 and the seller wants me to do any inspection the AA OR RAC,
thought id take some advice of you boys, but can a car be written of thats virtually new for
panel damage,

I would have thought it was unlikely that anew car would be written off soley for light panel damage. If there was damage to the structure or subframes that would be a different matter.

I was reading the policy on axas car insurance the other day, renewal time for me, and they have a new car replacement policy, if your car is less than 12 months old and the damage amounts to more than 70% of the purchase price they will replace the car.

So for a mini that would equate to £10k of damage. Lots of panel damage, some will be bolt on some will be weld in, but should equate to pretty much every panel, and a full respray...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
