Steering lock issue perhaps?

You now when you insert the key in the ignition, you hear that clicking and whirring noise as the steering lock is disengaged?

Mine has stopped doing it, and I've tried to make the wheel lock up with the key out, and it won't. There is no noise. Silence. Both keys.

I would be more concerned if it was locked and wouldn't free up, but I guess this is something I can probably live without trying to fix, as I'm sure it would be a hefty bill at the Dealers.

Any suggestions or thoughts chaps? Discovery 4 HSE

Love how I get the same problem at the same time as someone else.. saves me from creating the thread Laughing

Well not quite the same, but this morning I noticed the unlocking sound was *slow* so to speak, at the end of the afternoon when I put the key in, it sounded even slower. When I got home I took the key out and put it back in a few times and it sounded normal again, we'll see how it goes over the next few days I guess.

Be aware a broken locking mechanism could void the theft part of your warranty!

According to the workshop manual: the locking mechanism is sealed and cannot be fixed. If it jams in the locked position, I have to replace the entire upper steering column.. £1000+

Hi guys, sorry to rain on your parade a bit. There is the risk that the malfunctioning steering lock device (because it is malfunctioning after all) accidentally locks during driving. This has happened with other cars in the past (I had to deactivate i.e. break !! one on an old car of mine because of this issue).

I suggest to have a look around to see what the actual problem is (maybe some WD-40 will release a corroded/gunked up mechanism).

Little while ago someone has the steering adjustment issue, another GBP 1000 issue, resolved by a home made plastic nut as the original nut was stripped out (Meerbusch made it for himself and a forum member I believe). I hope for you guys there is a simple solution like this.

And in my experience (granted with somewhat older cars) NOTHING is sealed for life. My dad and I fixed plenty "unfixable" components (usually electrics) on cars and bikes by carefully prying them open and fixing the (usually very cheap) part that failed or just cleaning the internals !!! Being Dutch and all. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
