Hold down the home key and speak to Siri through the hands free instead. You don't even need to look at the phone, so it's as safe as using the heater controls, radio, sat nav etc.

That's as may be, but if the local constabulary happen to see you operating "a phone", it's going to be very hard to talk your way out of 3 points! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I would much rather be able to use the system as it is supposed to operate. Do either of you guys have the same problem as I am having?

If it's in the cupholder on a MY07+ vehicle it looks as though you're fiddling with the gearstick / terrain response / suspension / transfer box / handbrake / yourself. I am assuming that only the last one would get you pulled by the boys in blue. I find that I can use the steering wheel controls to read contacts, although it's tedious scrolling through 200 contacts so I don't bother. I use the voice control button on the steering wheel to answer calls, and pull over if I need to do anything else. 07 Supercharged - Still breaking her in!
