One for Baris I think

About 8 weeks ago, I fitted a Mk4 satnav to replace the water damaged Mk3 that came with the car. It worked and life was sweet Thumbs Up
However, it appears that things were not all they seemed. After about 5 weeks of faultless operation, the satnav failed Big Cry

I removed it and figuring that there was nothing to lose, opened it up to see the cause of the damage. There was a whole load of white cr*p which looks very much like water damage, which I cleaned up but also the unmistakable smell of blown capacitor. It also appears to have lifted the copper track next to the capacitor. 20 years ago (before glasses and when my hand was a lot steadier) I would have had a go at fixing this.

Herein lies my quandry. Is it possible for an electronics wizard like Baris to repair this or am I now the proud owner of a Mk4 paperwaight?

I am sure Baris can aid you in your quest for a more useful navigation system.

If he can lift the track in a BM54 unit and solder in newer power amp IC's, he should be able to help you.

Worth a shot. You've got nothing to lose at this point.

If you look for my thread on BM54 amp upgrade, I'm pretty sure he put his phone number on - could be wrong, or PM him.

Good luck.

Thanks Mark.
I'll probably drop him a line, but figured that there will be other members who may not be happy to open the unit up. Not a lot of damage, but the old eyes aren't what they were 25 years ago, or it would be fixed now Wink

I can certainly have a look at it for you. It really depends on how much the unit was on whilst wet. The lifted traces are not a problem, or the blow capacitors. However, if the bad signal from the wet circuit board reached the processor, its bye bye daisy and hello mr grim.

Is the red light on still, or the eject light?

Has your screen gone blank, and the tv tuner has kicked, causing you to have a blue interface?

What happens if you keep your hands on the eject button? Anything?

Baris,
It is completely dead. There is no red light, although the display still works, only in blue as you describe.
Not tried keeping my finger on the eject button. Does that reset the unit?
The rest of the board looks fine. I can post a couple of photos which may help diagnose if it is worth your time looking at.

Thanks for replying and I hope this isn't terminal Bow down

Can you post up some photos of the damaged circuit board?

Baris, I'll try to get that done tonight. Been a mad week so far (work 7 day a week right now) so as soon as I can I'll get those up.
