2010 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Alaska White
Lucky near miss

Unfortunately my wife's TDV8 aquired a puncture today & the tyre went flat. I came to the rescue, car sitting on flat level ground, used the LR scissor jack carefully (I'm very warey of these) and managed to get flat tyre off, just about to put spare on and the jack collapsed resulting on the car falling and resting on the brake disc!! Good news nobody hurt, but just wondered if anyone had a brand new jack collapse?

Normally I'd never use one, but since it was roadside emergency I had no trolley jack & axle stand available.

I think I should take up with landrover as the jack is obviously not fit for purpose.

Any comments?

Shocked I would refer this to the customer service rep on this forum, Nick.

You can try taking it up with LR if you really do have half your life to waste. It's the same jack as supplied with the Discovery 3 (some 200KG heavier) and it is nothing short of useless. Many have complained, all have been ignored or fobbed off.

TBH, that pressed steel flimsy thing isn't going to support the weight of a FFRR under anything except perfect circumstances. It really is unsafe but it's cheap, which is going to be the main reason for it being there, cost.

Bite the bullet and buy a small trolley jack to keep in the boot. I have a Halfords one in the place where the factory jack goes.

I had exactly the same thing happen on my old '02, but was luckier. I got a set of winter wheels/tyres and wanted to swop onto them. Tried to use my old trolley jack but it wouldn't lift high enough. So resorted to the jack supplied with the car - thats got to be supplied as fit for purpose surely! Anyway, first wheel in the air, just about to undo the bolts and bang the things back on the floor with the thread stripped on the jack. Sooo pleased I hadn't had the chance to get the wheel off or any of me in any gaps. Anyway, since then I got the halfords high lift trolley jack, which is OK but not brill. I had to knock up a piece of wood to extend the travel by a further inch and so that it would sit securely in the jacking point. Its also quite a hard thing to pump up - not nearly as smooth and light to use as my old one. Its also very big and heavy so no way would it fit in the spare tyre well. I've been following a couple of the bottle jack threads to see I can see which of them offers both the height and small size required to be carried. Until then it will just have to be an RAC job if I'm out and hope they carry a highlift! LR may well be culpable if they are supplying Jacks not rated for the weight. I've not even looked at whats in the SC, probabaly the same rubbish. Mike - MPx

Mine started stripping threads and got hard to turn. So much so that I have bent the twist handle considerably and the metal is past fatigued!

£35 got me a 20tonne bottle jack that can sit in the boot of my ff when I want. I have roadside assistance so I'd rather call them if I have the time and let them swap it over for me. Used the bottle jack in anger on wayfarers green lane and it was great! Went up quick and wheel off and swapped and down in about 15mins including emptying the boot!

I'm taking pics of mine and giving details over to Nick @lrcs as she seems to want to help get the LR reputation back on track. Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Since everybody here in Aus seems to be following the yanks, (SUE THE B*******TARDS) I pity landrover should a jack let go and injure anyone in the land down under!!!

I don't carry a spare tyre - LPG tank in the spare tyre space.

I use a "Stop and Go" tyre plugger. never had one fail yet, used on my Jeep and old merc estate without any problems, takes 5 minutes and you don't even get your hands dirty. On ebay for about £25 with enough plugs for a life time of punctures Very Happy .

If you can maybe invest in some 'Slime' for the tyres, its £5 a wheel but does a decent job of anything but large gashes Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I work on motorcycles for a living and can tell you some stories about how effective the "slime" type of products are. Or aren't. Rolling Eyes

I've done a lot of trips to and around morocco on my motorbike with large groups. On one such trip with a group of 8 bikes only one had slime in his tyres.
He was the only one to get a puncture, twice (once in the front, other in the rear), and each time the tyre deflated.

Oh how laughed Very Happy

Slime is great, until it leaks everywhere or seals up the valve so you can't put air back in ....
