buying advice pleas: 2009 40k vs 2010 70k - which is better?

Hi all,

I'm looking at a 2010 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE with about 70k mileage - question is, the same money will get me a 2009 with 30k-40k miles. My gut feel is the 2010 is the better bet, but would value the opinion of others

My thoughts are:

+ves
- to do 70k in 2 years, it must be mostly motorway
- comes with balance of warranty (about 9 months) - which feels a bit better than 6 months approved used
- seems to be in immaculate condition from what I can see
- 2010 facelift/electronic dash etc seems to be quite an upgrade from 2009MY

-ves
- potentially some big service/repair bills coming in the next year or two (maybe there would be anyway with a 2009??)
- discount for high mileage doesnt seem that great - probably about 5-7k than an equivalent 2010 with 30-40k

Thanks in advance!

I take it both have full landrover service histories, done on time. The 70k car must have had a few. How many miles a year do you do? Generally, gut feeling is the thing to go with, as it is you that's buying it! Thumbs Up Previously..

Always buy on condition.

The 70k one is likely to have been looked after better due to it covering such high miles so will have been someone's daily drive so they would need it good enough to get around anywhere and everywhere.

Its likely not had anyone in the back most of the time unless its been a chauffeur type car.

If both however are the same id go with the higher miler newer one. More warranty is always good and if you do low miles for a few years it will average out pretty quickly Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I would also go with the 2010 model. It sounds good, is the "newer" version and the mileage isn't that high (while likely to be a lot of motorway = good miles indeed).

Service history is important though, I would definitely weigh that into the decision. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Personally if you can get a car with half the miles for the same price thats only a year older id go for that. Will no doubt be in better condition also ie less stone chips to the front, less wear on the suspension components etc.

Suspension wear depends on the roads and motorways are often in much better condition than normal A and B roads. Lower miles means its likely seen more in and out action so more wear on the drivers seat, possibly a more endeered driver so extra stretch on the leather, and will have gone longer between services as well as having more cold starts which damage an engine more than being run for a long time at a set speed. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes thats all very true, but is all down to the individual car really isnt it and how well its been looked after.
When i was searching i looked at several with 70-80k miles and all were stone chipped and had wear to the leather, i then started to look at cars with half the miles on and the condition was much better overall, but each car is different. You could have a 100k miler that has been pampered since day 1 or one that has been just used as a work horse so all depends, Personally i would buy from a 'well trusted' dealer and know your getting a good quality hand picked car.

Sod the stone chips. If they are the same price, both have warranties, FLSH and both are clean and tidy then go for the one with more toys. I went for one with higher mileage over one with lower mileage but dodgy history and got more toys and it's done 10,000 miles in 6/7 months without any major issues (ok I knocked the tracking out, flattened the battery and shredded a tyre all three of which were my fault).

Doesn't the 2010 also have suspension improvements along with other under-the-hood stuff you would enjoy more long-term but not notice straight away?

Buy the newer one the mileage will even out over time so in about three years it should be average miles and enjoy the newer features and look over the older look onto no6 Range Rover

thanks all - much appreciated - plan is get a good one and keep it 5-10 years. Did this with my six year old BMW Z4 and it still feels like the day I picked it up (same joy but without the sheer terror when I floored it any time in the first six months!)

We'll probably keep the Z4 for fun and do 10k a year in the RR plus the odd long trip I expect.

Cheers!

In that case the newer one wins hands down as you will end up with average milage in a few years and below average mileage as it gets older Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

25k (miles!) service interval

found out some more info on the 2010 TDV8 and not sure if I should be worried or not - could be a disaster waiting to happen?
- its only had 4 services in 72k - one less than I was expecting - first service was only after 19k, and there were 25k miles between service 3 and 4.

From what I understand its condition based, so high mileage probably means motorway, which probably means low wear and longer intervals - but could it really be this long instead of 15k? whats the longest interval anyone else has? Feels like previous owner might just have been a bit busy...

comes with approved used warranty, but major concern is damage done could result in the need for a new engine, possibly just outside warranty period if I'm unlucky!

rest of the car looks good, so I really want it to be okay, but rather concerned

Thanks!

I would be very surprised if that service interval did any damage as there is quite a lot of leeway built in and the oil used is very high quality and last for longer than the service periods stated. Your decision though.

In a thread about the GAP IIDTool I think there was a mention that service intervals are calculated on a mileage and an amount of fuel used. If the car is doing mega motorway miles then it's likely to have decent MPG so the intervals will be lower. It's also an indication that the person doing the mega miles isn't thrashing it too?
