United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey
Cat D

Hi
First post - hoping to buy 3.6 TDV8 soon.

I have seen a few repaired Cat D's advertised and they are always described as light damage - and I am sometimes tempted to look and seriously consider one.

Today I saw this and am amazed that this is also Cat D.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-Range-Rover...120wt_1397

Being unaware about these things, I had imagined that Cat D was nowhere near something like this... I don't think I could ever look at a Cat D in the same way again!

David

United Kingdom

found this via googling,

There are five levels of damage used by the insurance industry to describe cars that have been involved in accidents. These levels, or categories as they're more commonly known, are labelled as A, B, C, D and F.

Cat F refers to a vehicle that has suffered fire damage. The other four 'Cats', A to D, all relate to cars that have had various levels of crash damage, and that are registered as such.

Cat A is the worst of the four, where a vehicle is so damaged that it cannot even be used for salvage and should be crushed.

Cats B and C mean that the vehicle has been heavily damaged and the insurance company has chosen not to go ahead with the repairs. Cat C cars are usually capable of being salvaged if the repairs are carried out correctly.

Cat D is the least serious category. It usually means that the vehicle has suffered light damage but the insurance company's decision to repair it is dependent on the cost of the repairs and the value of the vehicle.

If you're buying a Cat D car, there's no guarantee that it hasn't incurred chassis damage. You can find out for sure by investing in a full mechanical inspection at an approved dealership, or by RAC Inspections.

If you buy a Cat D car, make sure your insurance company knows about it, otherwise they might not pay up on any claim.

i would say its a cat a ... ... - .- -.

Thanks for replies.

I am realising more and more that previous ownership and history are the most important things about buying a used RR. Saving a few 1,000 on an apparently lower priced purchase could be a false economy.

I have been looking for a few weeks now and I know it may take some time to find the right one!

Thanks again!

Maybe it's only the front half that's a cat D? Whistle

If you look at how little the front wheels are turned and then how far round the steering wheel is, they don't match!

Anyway, back to the original question. Unless you REALLY, REALLY know what you're doing, I would steer clear of a cat D FFRR as your first foray into the marque. We all know some of them can be "challenging", so having one with no knowledge of what has/needs/hasn't been replaced is asking for a whole world of misery and (potentially very expensive) pain.

Aim a bit lower if your budget won't stretch to a good TDV8.

That's my 2p worth! Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

So if you buy the bodyshell they have, you will be talking £11390 without doing any work.....and the painting......... and it will still be a Cat D (?) so I say buy a Td6 or spend what it would have cost you nearly anyway, on a higher mileage TdV8, and at least sleep at night !! 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Noticed this going on for a long time, cat c the ones that need to be checked are light damaged, whereas the cat d which does not need to be checked are mangled, ideal for stealing someone's pride and joy and ringing it onto the plates, and never needs checked. WTF

The trouble with Cat C&D cars is that alot of insurance companies decide the CATing outcome is somehow linked to the size of their loss!

Our Golf Tdi was declared a Cat C last year after a collision with a small truck. To look at it, it looked fine. Front end was pushed over very slightly as the truck drove across the front of it, pulling the car sideways. the only way you could tell was by the gaps down the sides of the bonnet. No panels damaged apart from the bumper. Shame as it was a good car and we'd had it years.
No way is that one a Cat D 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
