Just got my renewal for my multi car policy. Now I'll admit, I hate changing insurers, I figure I'd rather pay a little extra, and have peace of mind, I don't really want to economise on car insurance.

But!

The gits wanted £1,821.39 for my Volvo XC90, five years NCB, but a couple of non fault claims, last year, one fault claim 4 years ago.

Now I know insurance has gone up a bit (a lot, not mentioning any ridiculous car rental claims hmm, hhhhmmm!), but still this takes this proverbial, so I steeled myself, got all the info, and went online to have a wee shop around.

Alternative quote, £475!

Admiral, quoting for me, with a lower excess £1,051!

So as a reward for my loyalty, they'd sting me for nearly £800 over and above what they'd insure me for as a new customer!

I'm sure I'm the only git who's been stupid enough not to shop around every year, but just in case I'm not, be warned!

Can't compare, different car, claim outstanding spanning renewal etc.

Just got a quote for my wife's car as well. Sheila's wheels wanted £659. Now have quote from Priviledge for £289!  2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

They push the multi car pretty hard. When I priced it up a while back, it was very competitive but I guessed this was their game. Bring in all your cars, and then squeeze the premiums higher.

Admiral's sister company Elephant has done 12 months insurance for me (22) on the TD6 for £1060!

Before that I was with Tesco who went from £2000 to 2200 after I built up my first 1 years no claim

The trick is to do a fresh quote, you'll probably save >20% if you cancel and then sign up again over just renewing

No need to guess, the 22 in brackets was not the MPG

I have just changed from Elephant to Admiral multi car and saved about £100, when I phoned Elephant to cancel the renewal they said they would have matched Admiral.

When I asked why they did not offer me the lower price in the first place they could not answer.

I really do hate this legalised insurance scam. A few years back before multicar became popular I found a "homefleet" policy where I got all 5 cars I had at the time covered for £800 when just one of them was attracting a £500 premium on its own. Each renewal it went up (as per!) despite dropping to 4 cars but still seemed "reasonable" given what others were saying that they paid for the same cars, and it was a lot less hassle. This year the renewal ask reached nearly £1400. A call to the broker resulted in a drop to £1k all in "as I'm a loyal customer" b*****ks....so £400 (28.5%) reduction for the sake of me saying "that seems a bit expensive" suggests that they may have a little fat built in there. A couple of hours with the meer cat and fat singer got all four back individually insured for a total of just over £700. So what's all this about insurance costs going up ? Apart from me getting 5 years older (which doesn't really mean much in old fartdom) the cars and values are more or less the same as they were all those years ago.

Obviously I understand that cheap means they wont pay out if I need them...but my experience with claims (mainly household to be fair) is that they find an excuse not to pay anyway, whatever the premium.

Admiral tried to bump my premium up by a factor of 2 this year.

An hour online searching and a new policy with them was just a bit more than i paid last year.

Phoned them up to say not to auto renew and they asked why and said i got a better deal online.

Spent a few minutes pushing buttons and the fella said they would match it.

Then he asked where i got the quote from and i said themselves, he said was i sure and i said yup but too late for them now as they already had me in at that price
