In the absence of any insights, I removed the rear A/V panel today and pulled it appart to remove the broken tip of my AUX jack. It turns out that it is a sealed unit with a couple of connectors consolidating all the various A/V wiring, so no AUX jack point to tap into for an additional socket in the front. I managed to break open the sealed unit and reomve the broken parts and get it back togehter. The laternative was to spend £120 on a replacement.
For the time being, I will have to continue connecting my iphone to the stereo using the is rear connection which gets kicked and knocked continuously by passing children.
