I think it's the sensor for the auto climate control

It detects the amount of "sunshine" outside the car and this helps to make adjustments to the climate control inside e.g. if full sunshine supposed to make things work harder to maintain temperature/perceived comfort, if cloudy, no need to work so hard to maintain a comfortable internal environment .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

I've never got this.

If the sun is out, it tends to be hotter, so the car will have to work harder anyway as the interior will be hotter. (if you are cooling - obviously)

If its cloudy, its cooler, so won't have to work as hard.

Can't the temperature sensors in the car be enough ?

Obviously the sunlight detector does something, as they wouldn't be fitted.

I'm not Captain Climate, no idea how they work, but I must be missing something........

I think the point of the sunshine detector is that when the sun is shining through the windows, the perceived temperature will be higher in the car due to the warming effect of the sun shining on your clothes etc. Therefore the Climate Control drops the air temperature a couple of degrees to offset this.

For years you'd be able to beat an ABS system by cadence braking yourself, but in the last few years, you can't anymore.
