Wales 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Zambezi Silver

Hey no problem matte. I started this topic just to get people talking and maybe get some tips on what to have done once the actual fault is diagnosed.

As of 5 mins ago the car was due to arrive at the auto specialists in about 50mins. So I still don't know if its TC, Gearbox, or any linkages etc. so the more info I have to hand when I know the problem the better.

Cheers No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Ashcroft Transmissions don't do the gearboxes on the Td6, but passed me on to another company called Signature Transmissions Ltd who sent me the following ;

"We do all the modifications to the valve body and the rest of the transmission, our units built are £1625.00 + vat, from OE they are still over £4k, we do remanufacture the torque converters as well, with regards to the cooler it is good practice to change this as any debris can cause problems.

We don’t have a unit built at the moment we can normally supply within a week or so.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me," 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Ok, latest from the garage. The front near side driveshaft has broken. This aparantly would give the symptoms as shown I am told. (can anyone confirm that?). The garage is investigating the reason for that breakage before they can check how the gearbox is. Will phone them later today for more news. No longer FF owner but still interested. My thoughts too. That is why they want to fid out the reason before they go on to look at the gearbox. It is a bit worrying though. They didn't actually say what was the problem in much detail, maybe it's a linkage or joint or something. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

The splines could have stripped on the end ?

Though I would have thought this would be "worn" as oppose to "broke".

By broke, I'm imagining snapped.......so don't understand that either........

Take it its had the driveshaft recall thing done ?

Something about a CV joint on the driveshaft, coming out the transfer box if I remember right. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

If the CV joint has broken away it can only be caused by something moving enough to allow it to pop out. It could be caused by anything from a faulty suspension joint to an engine mounting. Further investigation required Big Cry

Latest news. I'm not very technically minded but the description seems to be as follows. Near side front driveshaft has an inner and outer shaft (I assume to allow change in length), the inner shaft is turning independently from the outer, so whatever locates the shaft in place (splines maybe) seems to be broken. Repair shop are in the process of pricing up a replacement. It isn't possible to check the gearbox until shaft has been replaced! I'm not holding my breath Sad No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Right I have done reading up. The drive shaft is made up of a solid shaft which goes into a cv joint attached to the diff. There is an outer tube which goes into a cv joint at the wheel end. The inner shaft slides into the outer tube to allow changes in length. I don't know what exactly attaches the tube and shaft to allow them to turn together whilst still sliding in and out (splines maybe), there is also a ball race fitted inside the tube. In my case it seems the outer tube is turning independently of the inner shaft.

I guess it could have been caused by the diff seizing up whilst the wheel was still in motion and this broke whatever locates the two parts together. Obviously I am totally guessing here. I should know more tomorrow hopefully.

I am imagining a hefty charge if the gearbox or diff are broken as well as driveshaft. Fingers crossed Smile No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

This is the driveshaft, No.1 end goes into the diff, No. 3 through the hub.

It is splines that connect everything up, but I still can't fathom out what could cause them to cause slipping, it's a heavy bit of kit made from solid metal, not tubes

Section 47-3 of the service manual shows a cross section diagram of the components. The part marked 2 in that last picture is a hollow tube, The shaft that goes into the diff CV joint slides in and out of it. I don't know what the problem is but at he end of the day it's not working. Sad No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Just had a call from the garage. New drive shaft fitted and the car runs fine. So, fortunately it seems the gearbox has a few miles left in it (fingers crossed). No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE
