Gearbox broke ?!

My TD6 just ground to a halt whilst manoeuvring slowly. Rumbling noises and low gear symbol lighting up. Won't move forwards or backwards. I suspect is the gearbox (103,000 miles). RAC on their way so I suspect it may be best to have it recovered to a gearbox specialist. Chester auto transmissions is only about 10 miles away. No longer FF owner but still interested. Sorry to hear it Mikeyjd - happens to all the good people !

Mine did the same three years ago. Guess you need to be looking for sonnax valves as a part of the rebuild then you can go on forever! .

While I was waiting for RAC after half an hour I started the car and it drove perfectly for about 20 yards then stopped. Rattle noise in drive or reverse and no movement. RAC didn't send a man to look at it, just a low loader, they obviously suspect broken gearbox after my phone explanation. Will be stored overnight by the recovery company and taken to gearbox repairers in morning.

I have been half waiting for the gearbox to go, over the last few months just because of the mileage, although when it finally went I didn't get any warning. Luckily I was at my in-laws at the time not far away, so it wasn't any real inconvenience. In a way I am glad, I was planning on a longish drive on Tuesday and could have been stranded miles away.

Do you mean the 'Low Range' light came up when you say 'low gear symbol'? If so, it could be the transfer case and not the gearbox. Do you get "TRANS FAILSAFE" come up?

I would check the TC as well - much cheaper fix than the Trannie.

Cheers - Gav

For future use I wouldn't mind getting a Sonax - as when it finally lets go I can give it to the gearbox specialist to fit at the same time ! Does anyone have any prices for one here in the UK ? Wink

Literally in the last few mins I've received an email from Mackie transmissions.

They fit the Sonnax upgrade and offer a lifetime warranty on the torque converter.......

Seems like a top job to me........

"The cost to recondition both transmission & torque converter is £1850.00+vat,

We fully recondition your transmission & torque converter to manufacturers specifications including the sonnax valve/body upgrade and all this is done here at our premises mark,

We recondition your torque converter in house and it has a life time warranty,

Yes mark you need to replace the transmission oil cooler 100% as the fine metal lodges inside and it is impossible to get it all out, so best to replace it,

Hope this helps you to decide mark". 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Does this price include removing and refitting the box?

I did assume you had to ship your transmission to them, and they shipped it back.

Could be wrong.

I'll email back and double check........ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Just got another email.

Its a bit more expensive if they remove and refit from the car.

Now I'm confused with the lifetime warranty on the TC that was mentioned earlier ;

"Sorry I forgot to mention in my e-mail that if we do the complete job at a cost of £2642.63+ vat it comes with a three year warranty (parts and labour), if we supply the exchange transmission only then it has a 1 year warranty on the transmission & torque converter only". 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

So to recondition your own box is £2220.00

For them to do the complete job is £3171.15 Does this include the cooler?

Almost £1000 for them to remove and replace the box and fill it with fluid Shocked

Well if it's anything like the Lifetime warranties we hear about then the warranty runs out when it stops working as the lifetime has just expired and the TC is at the end of its life Big Cry

Thats my understanding.

As they are in Glasgow, its unlikely I'll take the car up there.

More likely to have the gearbox shipped up once removed.

Didn't think £2200 was too bad inc the Sonnax upgrade.

They may well do the oil cooler as part of the complete job.

How long does it take to remove and refit a gearbox ?

Can't see it costing £1000, but I'm not a mechanic....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

You need the right equipment to remove the gearbox, it will be a heavy brute...

I would think about 2-3 hours to remove and 3-4 hours to replace

Sorry Mikeyjd, seem to have taken over your thread with my email correspondence.

I hope it may be of use to you........ Smile

Just got this back from an email at automaticgearboxes.co.uk........

"I received your enquiry from Matt at Sussex Autoparts. We specialise in the GM5L40E range of transmissions they are upgraded with modified
parts in the valve body and oil pump from Sonix.

Once these units are rebuilt they are then tested on our dyno machine for 25 minutes this ensures the vehicle shifts correctly and has no leaks or noises.

Our warranty is 12 months, 12,00 miles which ever is the sooner and is delivered fully packaged together with fitting instructions and kooler flush, the costs for this is £1495 inc torque converter, there will be a surcharge of £500 which is reimbursed once we have the old unit back and delivery and collection is £80 all plus vat. A fitting service is available if requested.

Regards"

So if we ignore Paul's typos, thats £1794 inc VAT for a gearbox with the Sonnax upgrade. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
