I have just got back from a holiday in Lake Garda and I was amazed at how many reasonably priced vintage watches were available in antique shops. I was quite happy to spend well over £20k on a set of watches worth around £50k in the UK, but SWMBO intervened as she knew I wouldn't sell them!

Anyway she allowed me to purchase just one, and instead of buying something very expensive I went for a watch that is over twice my age! A nice 1950's (ish) Zenith hand-wound watch on a non-original strap. It's had a bit of work done to it (most things this age do to make them look attractive to me, fnar fnar).

Very nice, although I'd have been looking for watches with the El Primero movement...

Italy often comes up as a source of cheap watches (and sadly, fakes) but from the UK (or anywhere for that matter) buying online seems full of danger as most parcels either to Italy or from Italy never arrive at their destination.

I know a few people who've had good deals go sour becuase of the Italian postal service - and some couriers seem no better.
