Well hello as this is my first post on here

Im currently looking for a change of vehicle from a megane sport thats FAR to boy racer-ish and stiff for a daily driven car IMO.

Im looking at older 2002-2004 TD6 and 4.4V8's for circa 10-13K and then Im also looking at spending a little more for a 2006 4.2SC for 17-18K.

The problems Im having so far is I like the idea of a TD6 for the better fuel economy (even though they are sloooowwww) but from what I have read they have a gearbox made from chocolate and that really puts me off. This is where the V8 4.4 steps in...This has a better gearbox from the look of it but comes with higher fuel consumption (but may be less faults??)

The next on my list is a newer SC V8 car, I don't mind spending the extra if this model has less faults and from what I have read the fuel economy is similar to the 4.4 (may be a little better with a newer engine design).

So can anyone one shed so real world light on any of the above?

4.4V8 vs 4.2SC real world MPG figures and also any common faults?

Or im I better still looking at a TD6 even though the gearbox is weak?

Thanks for any guidance as Im flicking between "trying" a cheaper 4.4V8 for 10-11K and see how it goes or going all in for a well spec'ed 4.2SC that cost a fare chunk more to buy?

Td6. Drives crap. No power at all

Get it mapped and it won't be so bad.

Running a v8 na/sc on lpg vs a td6 on BioD isn't comparable to be honest for running costs.

You need to drive all 3 for a good 30minutes or more and compare.

Thanks for the great replys guys! One thing i should mention is this will be a 2nd car as i have a toy car for the weekends etc thats very fast 0-150 mph in 19 seconds so i really am not bothered about performance. The car needs to feel nice to drive eg. Not like a slug but im not after handling and straight line pace ect.

Is thw sc that much worse than the 4.4? Any one have any imput on how reliable thw sc is in comparison to the 4.4??

Never drove the 4.4L so couldn't pass judgement , but the SC i had was a great car , greedy bastard on fuel but hey ho such is life …  ====================================

Im i being to cautious or ar FFRR's as bad for reliability as people on the net make out? LOL..

2002 (BMW) 4.4 V8 getting 19.2mpg as per the last 3,000 (very mixed) miles.

Can't comment on the other engines, but I do really hanker after an SC.

The 4.4 V8 gives you the best of both worlds. Decent performance without being too uneconomical and affordable purchase prices bang in the middle of your budget. Si. <This is my name.

Enjoying my SC

I enjoy my TD6. Dont think its a slug & its not even chipped yet. Yes 4.4 goes a lot harder. Haven't tried SC4.2. Try them all and see what you think.

SC for me but the 4.4 is good too.

Driven normally high teens can be achieved.

In the SC you get a real sense of calm and total capability and then you put the pedal to the floor......

IMHO the best car under 20k on the road today.
