I've been a BMW owner for as long as I can remember, but I'm getting a little bored of the same old 3/5 series and am considering a change.

I'm in the mood for some luxury. That along with a super soft ride (which rules out the 5 series estates I was considering). I did have a RRS S/C several years ago and while I thought it was OK, I didn't fall in love - mainly considering the interior a bit on the cheaper side, and the ride not being as soft as i expected.

So, I'm looking at its big brother, the one I probably should have had originally. I have a budget of 15-17k so not too much. I doubt I'll get a TDV8 for that, but I hoped I could ask the below:

Is the TDv6 acceptable in this size vehicle?
Whats the market like at the moment - I want to minimise my losses, so is there a model thats holding its money?
Anything to look out for?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

There are no TDV6s in the L322 Range Rover, the diesel options are Td6 (BMW 6 cyl diesel) in the early models, then 3.6 TDV8, then 4.4 TDV8.

Forget the market and bite the bullet! You will love it.


An a prosaïc note, the market sees the (excellent ) 3.6L TDV8 becoming more affordable, it is a right time to buy one, go for Vogue or Vogue SE if you can find one.

I am in a similar situation as you, similar budget too. You can get a TDV8 just a bit over £17k but high milage. Nothing wrong with that as long as the car has been well maintained and is in good condition. I have not found one with the right colour combo in my price range yet but not been looking hard enough at the moment, finding it a bit difficult to let go of my E46 M3 which I have had for nearly 5 years now

Thanks guys - yea its a tough choice. I'd love the TDV8 after having one on loan for a few days, but realise it would be stellar mileage at my budget, and the thought of the 100k plus puts me off.

My issue has been I've only had highly depreciating cars over the last 5 years, spent absolute fortunes, so I'm trying to move to a car not losing thousands a month. I also only keep cars for around 6-8 months at a time as I get bored easily. Current 335d I bought in January for example.

What looks like its holding its money better at the moment, the 6 or 8 diesel?

P.S. Very Disco - does the high mileage not put off RR buyers?

Hi again, high mileage is not a major worry on TDV8, but if you need to wait a couple of months to afford one with less miles, do it.
obviously, the lower the mileage the better, but a nicely filled logbook or proof of proper service is more important than mileage. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Ignore the mileage and age and buy on condition and ask the owner to tak you for a spin. If they boot it from cold walk away

There's nothing wrong with high miles. I got mine on 124k last August and it's now on 144k and has had no major issues other than a cv boot and track rod end and wheel bearing

It's in the shop after a prang from another driver and costing £6k+ for repair so glad it wasn't my fault!

The td6 is a good engine but can be gutless as the gearbox is a pile of w4nk stain that really lets the side down. If you went to an auction you would definitely get a semi decent tdv8 but it would be an unknown a little bit

Out of curiosity, why diesel?

Have you considered petrol?

You could, if stemming any losses is paramount, buy an earlier 4.4 V8 for a lot less as prices are pretty low right now. Winter, as has been pointed out, should see them strengthen and you'd have relatively cheap motoring come your boredom threshold, money in the bank (doing nothing, but at least it's there) and not have needed to spend anywhere near your budget.

Sell before the cold snap ends with prices still strong.

Can't do another petrol unfortunately. After owning the RRS Supercharged and suffering with the average 17mpg it just put me off.

Last year I had an M5 and an E92 M3 - both ridiculously bad on fuel. It made me feather the throttle all the time and I simply didn't enjoy motoring because of this. Since then I got the 335d and, though not perfect, that has been good on fuel.

I will be using this car for commuting so it needs to be reasonable on the fuel.

Like you with your M's, the appalling fuel consumption on my SC took the edge off of it and it just became a challenge to try and improve the mpg, which really defeated the purpose.
I moved to a TDV8 6 months ago which had 114k miles on it, but like others have said, I bought on condition and history rather than the mileage.

I'm touching several pieces of wood right now when I say it hasn't missed a beat!  Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Looks like I need to save up for a TDV8 by the looks of it.

I take it they don't have the chocolate gearboxes on these models?

Are all TDV8s the updated model? (what changed on the interiors?)
