Scotland 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black
No drive through gear box, then fixed itself.

On Saturday drove the car for about 3 miles and then tried to reverse into a parking space, car would not go backwards, tried to go forward car would not go forward, put gearbox into park car would not hold on slight slope.

No error messages, no warning lights, no beeps but noises like gears rumbling, not grinding, when in drive or reverse.

Ignition off and on again still the same tried low range still the same back to high still the same.

Gearbox fluid and filters changed about 15,000 miles ago.

When the recovery truck arrived the driver tried again but still the same.

Driver and I pushed the car back up the slope to clear a parked car with the engine running and gearbox in neutral, OH driving, as she let the car roll down the slope to the recovery truck she said she thought it was working again, it was.

Drove back to caravan site no problem, towed home on Sunday no problem.

Any ideas?

Ian

Funny that. We were looking at TDV8s about 3 weeks ago and are still waiting for the dealer to come back with a price for mine, suspect it is so low he is embarrased.

OH mentioned selling it as we waited on the recovery truck.

This sounds very similar to the problem I am currently facing with my V8 l322 04 // So far this has happened to me around 7 times without warning one of the times was when I was driving on a busy road when she dropped into N luckily the other drivers let me coast over to the kurb.
So far I have found when this issue happens you switch the car off for a few minutes then back on put in N and push it forward 5 or so feet then try and see if it will go in gear some times this works first time sometimes not, i am wondering if this is a fault associated with the tow home mode and am praying it is not a toasted box.

Please keep us updated with the reason for your Fault as I would like to find out myself...

good luck and hope it gets sorted ...

In both your cases, look at the dash display to see if it shows R or D when this happens again.

So it's not seeing that you are in gear. You technically are, but the ECU sees otherwise. Could be a simple selector out of alignment issue.

Does it feel stiff, or not very positive in the selector action. In other words, can you tell which position the selector is in when you move it without looking. Does that make sense?

I did not look at the indicator for R or D, will look if it happens again.

Mine did not say "select neutral".

Selector does not feel stiff.

Spoke to my independant repair man yesterday and he is going to have a look when it goes in for a service in two weeks time, he said it sounded like the transfer box was in neutral, as used to happen on older models with a lever.

Its got a 400 mile towing trip coming up so could be interesting.

Had mine at the ZF Service in Dortmund and the egineer told me, it's very needful for the gearbox to shift slow through the gears and avoid to pull the stick in one fast single action from P to D or reverse etc....

maybe that helps.... XJC, RRV8, Series1 86 and 107% of real pleasure
