L405 vs. L322

Is there anyone on this forum who thinks the L405 will be better than the L322?
Of course it will be lighter and more efficient but from the information recently gathered from the spy pictures and forums, I think the L322 will be remembered as the last classic Range Rover, BMW have been spot on with this one.
TATA, I'm afraid want to make the Range Rover fashionable by making it more streamlined, reducing the glass area and diluting the Range Rover brand by putting the name on cars that have nothing in common with a proper Range Rover.
The new one looks like a Ford Flex and sure it will sell to new customers who want to be seen in the latest model of any luxury car brand but I doubt it will sell to the connaisseur who has owned previous Range Rovers?
They might keep their L322 until TATA or the next owners of the brand come up with a proper Range Rover.
I think we've had the original Range Rover which was great, then the P38 which wasn't so great but still a Range Rover nevertheless, the L322 which is the original Range Rover in spirit but better and now you have the choice of the Range Rover Evoque based on a Freelander, the Sport based on a Discovery and the L405 which looks like a Ford Flex.

I think it might be a lot more "car like" to drive, perhaps smoother, less driveline grunts & groan.

I can't imagine it'll be better as such, just much more modern. I'm going to have to reserve judgement until I actually get to drive one and see what those Censored gills on the doors are all about Laughing

I'm sure it will be objectively far superior to the L322 in pretty much every measurable criteria, but I think from looks alone it's clear that it's moving away from being a proper Range Rover with the trendy, sporty looks and tawdry detailing. I wonder if being based around a Jaguar car platform will make it feel less like a proper Range Rover too.

As much as I dislike their approach, you can't really blame LR - they're in business to make money by selling cars, and I'm sure they know what people want (even if those people aren't the same people who used to like and buy them).

How was it when the L322 was introduced in 2002 after the P38...did anybody like it right away? Don't get me wrong, so far I'm not liking what I have seen of the L405 Rolling Eyes but can't remember the launch of the L322 Embarassed

In my opinion - looking at all the available photos of the L405 and the ones comparing it to Ford Explorers - I think the L405 maybe to the L322 as the P38 was to the Classic Sad All being done by accountants. I'm glad i've got one of the first L322's which may have its problems but I think the build quality / weight will be far superior than the new one !

Wow, now theres a blast from the past! I have an old 1971 classic i need to restore (owned it for 10yrs plus) it was registered on my birthday hence the purchase and resto project eventually!!!

I'm going to sit and wait until the thing is announced/released and Test Drive time.

I wont buy if I HATE the way it looks.

I love our 2011 L322 4.4 TDv8. It'll be 2 years old at the end of Feb next year and this is potentially when I'd look to change it.

I'm half tempted to try and get one of the last L322 TDV8 4.4s and just keep it forever.

Time (and finances permitting) will tell.

Good idea, thing is you'll have to buy a demo as production of the L322 ceased recently.

If you're thinking of buying another version of what you already have to keep forever, probably far better to keep the one you've already got if it's never given you any trouble. It'll never be worth having to spend maybe 20K + to in effect get the same vehicle you already have.
For a small sum, you could buy the updated black grill / black lights & colour code the handles & vents etc to look like the latest 2012 version Thumbs Up

I too will be in a quandary whether to change to the new version. Mine will be a year old next month. At the moment I love the sound of the weight loss and possibly even more luxuries inside, but the outer views so far have left me feeling a bit disapointed............I don't want a sport or evoque which is what it seems to resemble more than the current Range Rover Big Cry

Absolutely agree, mine is going to be 3 yars old in January, so If I don't like the new one I will be looking for a MY 12, 4.4.

If it's the 3.6 TDV8 you have, then yes the upgrade to as new as you can find 4.4 is good Thumbs Up

If I really hate the new version, I'll either keep this one I have until it dies, or until I do Rolling with laughter unless another marque comes up with something nicer looking Whistle

Just not sure if I ever want to go back to a normal car. I like stepping up in rather than stepping down in Thumbs Up

Actually have an offer for a 4.4 Autobiography, 8 month old and 20'000km, but maybe it's better to hold and wait to see how the new one turns out, although I'm not very optimistic... Crying or Very sad

I think as a keeper, the 5L Supercharged Autobiography is the one to have.
Not sure about Diesels as a long-term ownership as they are more complicated and the 5L is kind of the ultimate engine and will be regarded as such in future.
