Guys,

I've decided I'd really like a 7 seater, for family purposes. What I'm really after is a disco 3, however my budget is proving unworkable (I want to spend max £10k, get high SE/ HSE spec, and auto leather, and it's just not going to happen, unless I also accept mega miles.

So I've started looking at alternatives, I want it to be a 4x4, so no estates, the obvious one is the XC 90, also considering Mitsubishi Shogun, Toyota LandCruiser.

Just wondering if anybody has any great advice on this?

I had a Discovery 2 Td5 ES for 5 years and enjoyed it. It did have ACE and the big stereo which makes all the difference.

A friend of mine sold a Disco 3 Tdv6 HSE on an 04 plate, with 110k miles on, back in May 2009, for £10k. Prob worth not much less than that now !!

Personally, I'd accept the higher miles or drop the spec, and still have a Disco 3.............

Is 100k mega miles ?

We had a land cruiser colorado andnit was pretty much neglected, proved to be bulletproof until a bottom hose let go and the block cracked.

The later models still seem a bit pricey to me and the ones with aur suspension (lc3 i think) suffer from the same sort of gremlins as The ff, compressors etc There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Get a cheap high miler D3 if you can from a forum member or the like.

Or just bite the bullet and get an MPV and save the cash. You can get good C8/806.... with the spec your after albeit without 4wheel drive for a LOT less and save on insurance, tax and fuel by a huge margin  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Well I did the deed, and got an XC90!

I thought I'd go for the safe option, rather than stretching my budget further to get a high mileage LR!

Must say I'm pretty impressed with the XC90 so far. Standard kit is not bad, drive is good enough, and economy impressive for a 4x4. I'll probably upgrade to a D3 later in the year, but when I'm in a position to get the one I want! Or maybe I'll just keep the XC90 for the wife, and get myself another Fullfat!  2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

You can let us know whether the extra money for an RR is worth it now..........

I think I can answer that already. There's just no comparison. The XC90 is basically an estate on stilts, no real pretence at being an off roader, but has AWD to give a little extra functionally. Basically it's very well designed to do what people buy it for, i.e. family wagon, 7 seats, etc etc.

Nowhere near the road presence of the Fullfat, driving position not high, turning circle poor, not anywhere near as luxurious.

I don't think I'll ever get excited about the XC90, but it's economical practical and well built, so is a great compromise.

We tried loads of stuff before settling on our initial decision of an L322. An XC90 was one of those things and it was awful. No side support on the seats that I couldn't get comfy in anyway, wiper stalk that goes the wrong way, probably nothing else wrong to be honest but those two issues were more than enough...  2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

Have to say years back when the XC90's came out i bought one of them fully specced and never had a problem with it thought it was a great car nice to drive ….. 7 seats were handy but never used ……..

Then my bro got one and when he came to visit with both of them being black it looked like two hearses parked outside the house

Well, had it a couple of days, and pleased to say, no signs of spontaneous combustion yet!

Having said that my water did get really hot in the cabin yesterday, and my snack bar melted completely, but I think that was more due to the sun. But i'll keep checking, and let you all know if it catches fire.

As for lateral support of the seats, I agree, it could be better, but apparently Volvos are renowned for some of the most comfortable seats ever to grace a motor vehicle (and very good orthopeadically), so I guess I can live with the fact that I'm not wedged in.

To be honest, although it handles a bit more like a car than a Fullfat, it's still not quite an Arial Atom, so I don't find a great need for lateral support.

Haven't used the 7 seats yet, in fact haven't used the rear seats since the kids are away for a week. We'll use the 7 seats very rarely, but when we do, it'll be great, effectively meaning we can use one car instead of two.

As I said before, not in the same league as a Fullfat, but so far seems a pretty good compromise for efficiency and utility, in a practical package which you'll appreciate, rather than love.  2012 SDV8 Vogue SE
