detachable towball wont lock in - now solved

Hopefully some wise one on here will have an answer for me. When i bought the car it had everything on it bar the actual detachable towball which i bought last week. This part is brand new and original westfalia just like the receiver. I can get it just about all the way in but it just wont lock in to place. Says on instruction it should just push in easily and lock but it seems to be getting wedged. I have it all correctly pretensioned etc. The receiver has not had the bung in and i am wondering if due to it getting wet etc whether part has contracted or something? I have managed to get it in with a bit of assistance with a hammer and then had to use a hammer to get it out again but that is not right. Any ideas?

thanks in advance

cheers Stan i have had a look and it actually looks fairly clean and tidy and no obvious thing to block it. Might have a go with a small file around the inside? L405 4.4 SDV8 Santorini/Black VSE

at least you know it does work [with a hammer] so cleaning it with a file or emery cloth makes sense..spray some silicon lubricant up there as well maybe.. ... - .- -.

I know it's the bleeding obvious but you are pulling the locking wheel out and turning anti-clockwise aren't you ? 2008 MY Supercharged

yes and that locks in to pretension mode no issues there. As i say with assistance of hammer it does go that last little bit and lock but i know that is not right L405 4.4 SDV8 Santorini/Black VSE

If the receiver is the type that has a plastic cap on the top, prise the plastic cap off and pour some oil in.
Also prise off the cap on the towball part and pour oil in there.
These bits seem to corrode over time.

I had this on ours. The red bung was in the side pocket with the dechable towbar. Rolling Eyes
An hour lying underneath it in the rain armed with a small pick set, a half round file, some emery and a tin of WD-40 sorted it. A horrible job, but at least I now know it's located properly. 2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

The lock gets stuck so easily. WD40 on a regular basis is the only way! Discovery 4 HSE
