here's my old banger in a quarry in North Wales over the weekend.

I haven't had it very long and don't have any off road driving experience so was deemed a scared bunny for not wanting to take it down a slope that had some parts of the track at 30degrees and a 100m flooded quarry at the bottom. I watched an old Defender going down on his brakes and he was slipping around a bit but seemed to get down and back up again without too much fuss.

what's the best way to learn how to use these things for more than shopping?

You should try and get a day out at a landrover experience centre.. Your local dealer might be able to help you. It really is amazing what these cars can do and you have to experience it to appreciate how good the FFRR is off road. Thumbs Up Previously..

yep it was pretty close to Bangor.
I'm based in Northampton but as the coast was closed we were in Dorathea quarry at Nantlle diving at the weekend.
tbh wreck diving is my thing and the FFRR is just to shift our kit about in a bit of comfort and my V70 T5 didn't seem to like the weight of it all
next time I'm that way I'll shout but this weekend is Plymouth, the following week I'm in the Shetlands, week after Northern Ireland. I'm looking forward to a quieter time end of August and may have a bit more of a play with the car then.
I'm glad it's lpg as with the miles I do I would have to sell the house to pay the petrol price Smile

Is it closed or open to public as its only 3 miles from where i'll be staying so is an easy one to pop over to, specially if raining Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

it's private land but locals and divers have been wild using it for years
the locals run, cycle and mx around it and the divers use it for training as its something like 104m in places
if you head south along the A487 take a left at Penygroes onto the B4418
as you come into Nantlle heading east you will see a row of bungalows on your left and a left turn just after them.
take this and it leads to the quarry

the road from either entrance to car park is easily drivable but before thinking about going down either of the two slopes to the waters edge get out and walk it first
let us know how you got on

a quick scribble in paint

ok that doesn't replicate as clearly as would be good
the red dot to the upper right indicates where the left turn is
the text box above the water marks the car park
and the purple blob shows the "beach" access to the water

Going down steep hills in the FFRR is surprisingly easy, just put it in low-range and hit the HDC button (I'm assuming they all have it?). The scary bit is trusting the car to look after it all for you, and as long as it doesn't cook the brakes you're usually ok.

That said I don't think I'd fancy heading towards a big body of water I knew was 100m deep, unless I had my wetsuit on ready for a good swim and was in someone else's FFRR ....

Well I popped by on Saturday and the place still seems to be in use Shocked

Couldn't see any big deep lakes there mins but some semi steep gradients that the FFRR easily took in its stride Smile

Was this the entry point you used?

I didn't dare use it as it was heavily overgrown and I had everything with me but loppers and some saws Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
