Hi Gents

Now as my RR has been running like a dog I finally went under the bonnet and had a look around I removed the box thing over the engine and found this hose at the back of the engine, Am I right in saying it's a breather hose of some sorts or something to do with the air flow (I know sod all about cars but want to learn). either way even I know that this should not be like this, this being marsh mellow feel with a great big tear in it. It would be great if I could be told what this does what would be the effect on engine performance in this state and most importantly a part number if poss..

I have taken some shots of the hose not sure how to get them on here though

PCV Hose, there are 2 (3) of them. Two over the top go into an oil separator cyclone at the back left hand side of the engine and then a small third hose runs down from that onto a metal pipe that runs into the sump.

The BMW hose is not oil resistant so it just melts after a few years.

Do a search for PCV Hose and you'll see the writeup I did a while back.

Spot on exactly the hoses I was talking about ... Thanks ... I read your previous post and read you were getting a engine warning light come, I haven't had this I have had the car sounding like its gasping for air and only doing around 11mpg which is costing me a small fortune .. Do you have any idea what other problems this could cause as I am now as you may see in other posts having problems with staying in D etc sure not related but thought I would ask...

I cant see it causing any problems with the gearbox shifting....



Problems associated with an open PCV system include:

Water in the oil from sucking in too much air into the crankcase.

Blowing all of your oil out when the water in the oil freezes solid in the rest of the PCV system or oil pathways.

Poor, erratic idle and stalling.

Terrible fuel economy, as you've already found.

When you say terrible fuel economy, how bad are you talking? Mine's averaging between 15-17mpg under normal driving, (4.4 V Wonder if it's worth me taking a look at my pcv hoses.

15-17mpg under normal driving, I think thats about normal / a good return

I get 17/22 on petrol, 15/17 on LPG

If you've not looked at the hoses then it's worth checking, this is a problem that happens on EVERY bmw M62 engine due to the type of rubber they use. 

blimey Dan 17 to 22 on Petrol is fantastic - is it still worth the conversion to LPG if it drops by 5 mpg?

I'd expected it to be around 17mpg as the norm, infact, it's exactly the same consumption as I was getting on the Maserati.

I currently get 16.9mpg on gas Hilarious at 51ppl.

Over double less the 5%
