If you have a feed into the headlamp 12+v, then detection of the current flowing when the headlights come on should activate the DRL dongle to turn off/dim the DRLs .

As you have a 2012MY yes the DRL feature can be enabled using a Faultmate This will give you just the front LED side lights on all the time with the light switch in "off" or "auto"
