2015 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Barolo Black
TD6 Transmission fluid

Hi,

I'm now well into the process of joining the rangie club and getting on 05 plate vogue TD6. Dealer has just put it through an MOT for me and having a few last checks done before i get the keys late next week.

Shes not to bad milage wise - 64k, which makes me think i need to perform a bit of preventative maintainance almost straight away:

I've read a few conflicting things re. the automatic transmission, some documentation says the Tranny is sealed for life, and other people say that you should change the oil at 60k to stop it cooking. Is that the case? is 60k about right? Also, thinking of taking this to an automatic gearbox specialist (Briggs Motors - Fareham UK) Any idea of what i should expect cost wise to gauge his quote against?

Secondly, whats the service interval for the cambelt on the TD6? is it 60k or 80k? not been able to find this anywhere.

No belt on TD6 its a chain so should last life time of engine cant comment on gearbox as I have a TDV8.

Thanks Guys, from reading that i think i'll get it done (the transmission, not the cam chain - bonus Smile ).

Briggs motors said in the region of £100, so i think i'll let them take the pain for that, although i'll check to make sure they are using suitable oil and swaping the filter.

I've been quoted at a local auto box specialist £85 +vat and it would take 3hours for the work and just to bring it in warm so it drains more eaisly Smile

I'd ideally like a flush like the tdv6 guys can get but its apparently not availabe on the FFRR though i cant see why not as we have a cooler for the fluid so should be possible...

with low prices like that i would ask what oil there putting in, its supposed to be texamatic 7045e oil which is developed for that gearbox. the oil cost 15 quid a litre and changing the filter with it normally takes around 6 litres to refill it, so taking the cost of oil added to the price of the filter plus there labour doesnt take a genius to work out they wont be using the recomeneded oil.

Genuine Land Rover filter and sump gasket will give no change from £100, and Texamatic 7045E will cost £15 per litre plus VAT. If you remove the gearbox sump plug you will only be able to drain around 4 litres of ATF at a time. Removing the sump and replacing the filter will allow around 7 litres of fluid to be changed.

Texamatic 7045E can be bought for around £65 for a 20 litre drum if you shop around, aftermarket filter and gaskets around £55 (I don't know the quality of these items) so for a garage to take on this work for £85 doesn't sound right.....and it will not take anywhere near 3 hours.


My preferred method for changing the ATF and filters would be:

Remove sump plug and drain ATF
Refill and start engine working through the gears.
Repeat the above another twice....(well you have 20 litres of ATF at a very good price)

Finally drain the sump, remove the sump, replace the filter, replace the sump using new gasket, refill to correct level......Job done.

Some folk mention removing the cooler pipe and spinning over the engine to allow more fluid to be removed. I have discussed this with several mechanics and they all say it's not recommended, therefore I have never done that.

Just joined the forum but had gbox issues on my TD6 in the summer, I ended up getting a 20 litre drum of Texamatic 7045e from a oil specialist in Stevenage, Herts (cant remember name of the place) for about £85 delivered. Was enough to go into the rebuild I had to get done Sad and for the yearly oil change I got to have this coming summer to keep the warranty valid.

Just bit of info seeing as a lot of people are saying up to £15 a litre

Treading very carefully here.
I did a bit of research into the oil for the TD6 transmission today and came up with these.

ELF - PRESTIGE LL

AMSOIL - Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid- Nulon Australia

Now I have always thought of Nulon and Amsoil as bit like snake oil but I have reason why, maybe its the names.
All the above claim to be replacements for Texaco Texamatic ETL-7045E.
Texaco Texamatic ETL-7045E is not easily available here in NZ apart from the dealers if they stock it.

Just as an addendum to this topic, I've been doing some research of my own and spoken to an ex-colleague of mine who works for BP in their lubrication division and he recommends Castrol Transmax Dextron III Multi-Vehicle. Reading the technical data sheets of both this and Texaco 7045 reveals very few differences, with the Castrol product being arguably superior. Unfortunately, it only appears to be available in 1 litre bottles over here at £10 a pop, so 7045 is still the better option, but if you can buy it in bulk elsewhere then I wouldn't think twice about it if it was cheaper.
