Hi Guys,

i know it's the wrong place to ask, since we're all FFRR mad, but I'm tempted to get a Disco 3 in the short term, to get back into a Land Rover, and I can pass it onto my wife when I get a TDV8 (or L405) in due course.

I've never had a Disco, and at first the idea didn't really attract me, until I realised I could have a quicker car, with terrain response, better economy, plus 7 seats! I know it'll never be a Range Rover, but that aside, are they good cars? Any good/ bad experience to report?

I've found one locally with leather, climate control etc, though the owner says it's an 'S' model!

Don't think about improved economy as its not loads better!!

I looked around ages ago and went from and fl2=>d3=>FFRR.

Simple thing is reliability on them is shocking at times and makes the FFRR look very good.

They are more basic/utilitarian inside compared to an ff and I always felt the ride was harder.

Also watch out for the engines as when they begin to rattle... And there's 2 belts on them that need changing iirc, egrs that clog up but the usual electric gremlins we have as well. Just look at the d3 forum and how quickly the pages are filled that day to see how they are...

Seriously though, most owners seem to really rate the D3 though!

However I'm sure you're right, but I'm not buying any Land Rover product for the reliability!  Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

I had a D4 rental car in South Africa and used it for my Kruger park trip. Have to say it is pretty good, not as good as a FFRR but pretty close. Only used it for a week and no gremlins popped up. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I did about 12k or so I think it was in 3 months in a d4 hse and it was good bar one callout.
I had an SSRR or a week and killed it!!!

I've had another d4 xs since and it was a 1 callout wonder as well but all usin the 3.0litee v6 HDi unit and the SSRR was a tdv8...

To be honest unless you get one below £10k and budget or work its not worth entertaining, as just think how much agro you'll get from the boss if it gives her issues... And I'd honestly rate anything less than motorway runs as on a par with my td6 as the 3.0 ones only just beat it with my sedate driving style and I think most of that was down to the gearbox setup... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I hired a disco 4 for a trip to Skye and was very impressed on quality and options.

Have always wanted a real RR hence my recent purchase else I would have considered the disco 4. 

Amazes me how Whatcar always choose's it as the best 4x4 , and the FF doesn't even get a sniff at its undercarriage ...

I had a D3 back in 2005 and had it for 3 years and 47,000 miles...really liked it but didn't love it, never had any major problems other than the EGR valves needing replaced and front discs. I had mine remapped which made a huge difference but it still had a dead spot when you came to a junction or roundabout and tried to get away quickly it would just take that second for the throttle to respond which was really annoying. I would imagine a D4 would be a better bet

We are lucky enough to have both and I love driving them both The D3 is clearly not as refined or as luxurious as the FFRR but is still a very, very nice car! Happy to swap with SWMBO from time to time but she prefers her Disco and ultimately I my Rangie

I would suggest a good test drive and make up your own mind, Disco3.co.uk is a very active forum and reliability can be a problem for some but we have had ours nearly 3 years without any major issues and when it snows I will always pick up the disco keys first as its superior in those extreme conditions
