High mileage 4.4 ..... How long to keep it?

Hi everyone, our lovely (LPG converted) 4.4 has done close to 150,000 miles so far. It has had several radiators, and a gearbox rebuild recently, but other than servicing the engine is untouched. We get the odd random error and have the usual niggles, but other than that we love it, and it has the av mods and spec we need.

How long do these engines last? Assuming no rust issues in the rear arches, what would be terminal for the car? We have not save up for a replacement yet, and we are wondering how soon we will need to wave it goodbye...

Any thoughts?

David

I'd say given luck and care the engine should be good for another 150k at least. You may be in for a gearbox rebuild if you haven't already, and of course it'll be rolling replacement on things like suspension components. Keep it for another 5-10 years at least! If airbags haven't been done I'd say in the next 3 years you will need them all replacing, and as above suspension bits and keep her dry inside and worry more about the electrics Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

As above - ignore the variable servicing indicators and change the oil once a year or every 8,000 miles - whichever comes first. Engines last forever if looked after. I pulled the engine in my mk2 GTI at 127k just to put a bigger bottom end in and when I took the head off it the bores were perfect. No scores, no ovality and the original honing marks were still present. I'll use that engine again one day. I wouldn't be surprised if you managed half a million miles on yours. Very Happy
