Hi Guys

I have found two vehicles which Iam considering.Both are TD6's,and both are 2002 with two owners and FSH.

One has covered 66000km's and the other 118,000km's.

The one with the higher KM's has just had a brand new gearbox fitted by Landrover (under warranty) and is owned privately,the guy has maintained the vehicle very well.

The difference in price equates to about £4000.00.But in terms of the condition they can't be separated.

Do you guys think that its worth that amount of money to drive a car with lower km's.I don't drive high km's annually and £4000.00 could buy a lot of potential repairs.

If you are talking 44k mls against 78k miles than I would probably want the lower miles. Whether its worth £4k more though on a 2002 car is another matter.

What are the actual prices in £'s ?

The car with lower KM's is £22,400.00.
The other is £18350.00.

Yes expensive by UK terms.

Just to give you an idea a new 5.0 SC Autobiography costs from around £116,000 and a TDV8 Vogue SE from around £99,000.00.

Oh but you get a 3 Year 100,000 km warranty and a 5 Year 100,000 km Maintainance plan for free

But second hand values on any vehicle here in SA are very high.

I was looking at this idea but to Australia. I did a comparison of used car values (excluding import taxes and shipping, probably about £10-15K) for a vehicle the same specification as mine. Over there, it was about £61k. That is a little over double what I paid.

The descrepancies on new car prices are a lot less. A TDV8 Vogue is about about $150K which equates to a bit over £75K

Looked at this option but unfortunately Cape Town docks is as far as any vehicle would get.
Its not possible for a South African resident to import a used car.

As brief as I can ;

As far as Iam aware only first time immigrants to South Africa or returning South African Citizens (depending on how long they have been out of the Country) may bring in a vehicle.

There are further regulations on how long you must own the vehicle prior to shipping to South Africa which impact on how much,if any,import duty you would be liable for.

Thereafter there are further regulations about how long you must own the vehicle in South Africa before it can be sold.

After all that it then seems that any vehicles which are brought into the Country in this way do not retain the same re sale value as a vehicle purchased here.

All that said I would like it if anyone could disprove these thoughts.Thats without some dodgy deal thru Botswana or Mozambique being involved!!
