I've done a search but can't find anything about this.

A few weeks back, I noticed a judder from the steering at parking speeds from the left side and only when that wheel was less loaded, such as parking in my sloped drive which is on a hill.

It was only occasional. But it has developed when on the flat and, again, occasional.

A low frequency vibration, similar to an out of balance wheel, has also developed this week. Annoyingly, we're 450 miles from home in Scotland. The vibration is at all speeds and doesn't seem to change, although it's slightly less prevalent at high speeds.

Had a brief look underneath and given the front N/S wheel a good shake, but nothing appears loose. But that's with the car on level ground and in neutral and with the handbrake off.

So, any suggestions? I'm hoping it's not serious enough to prevent us getting home. It's starting to really worry me now, though. Steering isn't pulling from what I can gather. Si. <This is my name.

Can the speed sensitive power steering cause something like this ?

I seem to remember reading something about sticky valves in the rack.........

Could be wrong...

You've not clobbered an alloy and made it out of true ?

Suppose you could discount the wheel bearing or brakes dragging if the wheel doesn't feel warm ?

Haven't clobbered anything at all.

Wheels are same temperature and there's no uneven brake dust.

Here is something I read about valving, though you could have different symptoms now I've found it !

"One owner reported the problem finally identified and solved on his vehicle, after 7200 miles and 6 attempts at balancing the tires, including replacement of the front ones. It emerged that the problem has nothing to do with the tires -- it is caused by a valve in the steering rack that controls the amount of fluid to the variable speed steering. Owners with the vibration problem reported that if you accelerated slowly from a dead stop, the vibration did not occur. If you floored it, vibration every time. It appears that the valve could not keep up with a rapid change and malfunctioned (55 mph is where it is programmed to make a major adjustment in steering tension). The defective steering would then shake the car out of balance explaining why it would drive well for about a week after balancing, then vibrate again. The fix was a replacement part for the defective valve in the steering box."

Can't think of anything more - driveshaft ?

Similar. My tyres have just been changed and the wheels balanced.

That's one similarity.

Noticed it was worse this morning after a very short, but spirited, drive near the shore of the Lake of Menteith last night.

Gentle acceleration, however, does not cancel the vibration. I drive like that most of the time and the vibration is pretty constant.

Driveshaft? Possibly. Worn CV? Noticed the FF uses those horrible rubber UJ couplings rather than a proper Hardy-Spicer. Wondered if one of those has perished. Si. <This is my name.

Might be a sticking brake caliper, are the wheels getting hot?

servotronic valve is the thinghy you might need....heavy steering at low speeds is one symptom.. ... - .- -.

Are you steering straight? If you are having to turn the wheel a bit to go in straight line your problem could be with the steering control arm? .

Warped front brake disks:

I had the same problem, do you get any extra steering judder when braking ?

If not, it could be the back disks.

To check the condition of the disks. feel the surface, it should be smooth.. if it's lumpy, might be time for new disks!

Discs had crossed my mind, but it doesn't explain the judder through the steering when turning at parking speed with no brakes. And that judder is always when turning to the right and never when turning left.
