oil change

Hi all

my friend used my car for a few days last week and as a favour he did an oil change for me

the only thing is he used 5w-30 instead of 5w-40 is that ok or does it need to come out

when i start the car from cold you get a slight rattle for a split second

what are your thoughts

So long as the oil meets LR spec it will be fine. It probably had a slight rattle on start-up before the oil was changed, only now you are listening for it.

is 5w-30 ok as LR recommend 5w-40 Whistle


it didnt make that noise before im sure

and i think some people have had this before on here when using different grade oil

Use what friend put in for a week or so to flush the engine then swop for correct grade Mine was a blue one! Smile

Its a matter of which 5w-30 he used. Has to meet lr spex. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The variable valve timing system will "rattle" at startup sometimes; the oil drains back out of it. Takes a moment for it to pressurize.
There's supposed to be an anti-drainback valve to prevent that; it fails sometimes.
(this is a BWM engine issue)

IF the oil meets LR specifications, you're fine.
Ask him what oil he used, look it up.
Oil viscosity is not the only determining factor.

For my 2005 BMW engine, these oils are OK:
Castrol Syntec European Formula 0W-30
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra 5W-30
Valvoline Synpower 5W-30
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W-40

Different viscosities, but they all meet BMW's LL-01 specification (ACEA A3/B3).
Viscosity is significant depending on the temperature range in which the vehicle will be operated.
I use Mobil 1 0W-40. Only available in quarts, not larger sizes. That sucks.

Read the manual, see what's OK.
Decide based on that. Jim
