I am looking to buy a car that currently has a private plate and the owner wants to keep the plate. What is the process for getting it back on it's correct age related plate? I presume the current owner does this before I buy it?

yes they will have to pay the £80 transfer fee to have their number moved to their new car. DVLA will allocate a new number to the car it has been removed from. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Yes, that's the usual practice. You'd only get a new number if the car was registered from new (or from import, if applicable) with the private plate. Graham

DVLA state the whole process can take upto 6 weeks but in my experience plates are fitted in around 10days and logbook another week/10days...

If the seller is near a dvla office i think it can be done over the counter, i put a private plate on mine over the counter. Easy peasy if you have all the papers. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
