Compressor

My air compressor has become very lazy so much it would take an age to reach offroading height if at all. I got hold of an old compressor off the bay and with another one from swast (Adam) made one good one. I stripped them both down and the main thing was pistonring being worn. The cyclinder had a nice groove at the top where the piston had worn the ring down and was contacting the cyclinder at the top. I used a bit of wet and dry and roughed up the piston ring then put a nice coating of vacume grease all over the ring (yes dirty mInds can add an innuendo here). Also did the same with the valve in the cyclinder head. Rebuilt and tried in the car!
Happy to report she now makes offroad height from access in a little over 30seconds. I'm now very pleased. I will keep and eye on it and see how long it lasts. The grease was recommended by one off our instrument tech's. Has a working range of -20c-200C so should cope well with the heat generated. Hi Rob

I was having same problem with my 53 plate - the AS inactive lockout due to the compressor taking too long to fill the bags. I stripped, cleaned and lubed it but to be honest, it didnt help much.

Around the same time, I had the LPG done and the compressor was relocated to the pocket in the RH rear wing well. In this position it has to be vertical, but its well packed round with the insulating cap plus more foam rubber. I took some of the mounting frame off to get it to sit low in the pocket. Strangely, it has never faulted since! (touch wood) I think its maybe to do with the piston running in a different plane. Mine takes about 20-25 secs to assist a height change upwards.

Just something to think about!

Hey Rob,

How long to strip the compressor and did you meet any 'surprises'?

Think I'll have a go at this.

Thumbs Up

Guys, a quick test for all of you... If your car struggles to achieve off road height? When it gets quite high up on the airbags, stand with your bum on the front wheelarch and lift the side of the car a little and listen for air leaks (dont go too mad as its just an aluminium wing) Then repeat on the other side...

Most cars with a front airbag puncture cannot achieve full height easily (due to more air leaking the higher you go) We have seen cars drive for months with a bag gone (normally parked overnight in access mode) so you cannot see it drop overnight...

Thats often how a compressor gets worn out. Over working!

Im not trying to say you all have airbag punctures! But, when the symptoms of "long time to raise" come up, its a quick and simple test to rule it out...

Craig Thumbs Up

Once it's out of the car it took about 10mins to strip to the piston. Mine was a spare so was already out of the turtle shell, but that's easy to get into. Remove the bracket with mounts on. 10mm socket and think it was 8mm to undo the pressure valve. Once thats off, remove the hoses there just push lock fittings. Then use a a trorx to undo the head bolt and a 10mm open ender and pull the head off. Then you can clean up and inspect. I cleaned up the air cleaner side the big black tube. That's sprung so be careful when undoing the last bolt. Not powerful but will make you jump and you could loose some of the bits if unprapared.
My old compressor was in he RH side in the right orieantation, it was still Censored and quite loud. The second compressor is in the wheel well and is much quiater so think I will make that a perminant fixture and remove the old one. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Craig
Ive even having errors coming up as "too much energy needed to regulate front axel" and he same but rear right, spoke to storey and he said burst bag, and tried your test but nothing, no loss of height over night etc. as it wasn't always front axel thought it could be the compressor being lazy and turns out it could well be just that. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Thanks a lot, Rob!

Big help.

Craig I will also try your test too, have to be careful though- lots of guinness this week so too much exertion may cause an air leak from me!

Thumbs Up
