New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

Reading Raymonds trip report (broken roof rack bracket), I suggest that whenever using roofracks that you use more than the "normal" 4 support points (unless only used for light loads on smooth roads). Looking at the rails on my car, there are quite some points indicated as support locations, I would get a roofrack that uses at least 3 if not 4 points on either side (so 6 or 8 in total) to get a good load distribution.

I am used to "abuse" of things a lot (typical for the offshore industry) and therefore tend to design things to be extremely strong. Needless to say that sees very little failures (as failures in our industry are usually extremely expensive). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

TJ, nice here although the weather in the past couple of days has been rather... British. Razz
Which rally are you referring to?

Eba, agree with you completely as on P1 of this thread. But, unless you destroy the rail covers, 3 mounts per side is the max you can do. Pic of the rack I made up for my P38/roof top tents.

WRC Rally de France Alsace http://www.rallyedefrance.com/?lang=gb Thumbs Up

Interesting picture of your P38,, does anyone know of a make of bar, that would fit on a later full fat ??
Have not checked as yet, but guessing i have 3 locating points on mine,,

Taking the quads down to the Pyrenees in May on the trailer. so the tent/bars will only see the tarmac roads, so thinking a magnolia will be fine attached with 3 crossbars Question Question

Could take the Defender, but looking for a more comfy trip Bow down California F1, RR TDV8 Vog SE 90 V8 Hybrid

Yes, the L322 has 3 per side as well. Go to Topix>l322>owner>accy. Install. Instr.>safari rack (roughly anyway Rolling Eyes ). The instructions show the rack mounts. It is actually easier to make very solid mounts for the L322 than earlier RRs: all you need is a stepped aluminum block drilled for a bolt. Clamps for rails are unnecessary.

Do be aware that there is a curve to the roof. This is why the middle mount in the pic above sits higher than the end mount(s). It seems that RhinoRacks offers a short middle crossbar to address this - also discussed a page back.

Interesting on the rally. I'm not a huge WRC fan, though I am pretty much nutty about all things motorsport. I'll have to check it out. I'll be at the Rhine Ring (Anneau du Rhin) this WE with a couple of guys who have modded their Porsche Turbo's to 600+ hp. The strongest car has over 800... Shocked

EDIT: I guess it wasn't discussed a page back. Just had this discussion somewhere recently, tho. Pretty sure it is RhinoRacks that offer 3 crossbars for the L322.

I have 3 Rhino Racks ( Aero bars) fitted to my L322.

http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_LAND%2..._4101.aspx

Or here for Thule.

http://www.thule.com.au/fit-my-car.php not sure if this is 2 or 3 bars

Over here Rhino are a bit cheaper. I'm sure other branks have something simular for the L322

Thanks Gary Thumbs Up Was it you I had this discussion with? Can't remember where it was.

I'm pretty sure Thule does not offer a 3 bar option. At least they didn't when I originally checked for my P38. And the instructions on the website don't show or mention 3 bars.

Thanks Stev. Yes Think it was me Question Laughing

Think your right about Thule only 2 bars
Also checked Rola Racks. 2 + 1 bars but I think only available in Australia & US
Prorack / Whisperbar, again 2 bars ??
Which brings us back to RhinoRacks. 3 bars. I'm very happy with mine. Have the thru Aero bars. Have a Thule Motion 200 top box [ 410 lt ] & a Rhino foxwing shade ( not mounted yet). The Thule top box was the only one that I found that didn't interfer with the tailgate when fully open. Topbox mounted on 2 rear bars. All others I tried hit tailgate. Slight noise from bars when sunroof open.
Sorry no good pics

Gary

We stock the Disco and Defender Rhino Rack gear and can get the full range.

Let me know exactly what model and I will see what current supply situation.

Thule bars are typically sold in pairs.

Be careful with aero type bars as they tend to be wide so standard as supplied roof tent fittings might not fit without modifications.

Two roof bars are good for road based use. Offroad/rough road consider 3 bars.

There is no need for a full roof rack to mount a roof tent, 3 roof bars are Thumbs Up

Typical weights of roof tents are in the range of 50-65 kg. Carbon fibre shells roof tents weigh about 12kg less then the non carbon fibre ones but cost about £1,000 more

Brendan

Edited to add

PS If anyone wants info on Thule bars ring Chris on 01274 680744 as he stocks a wide range of Thule bars. A helpful guy Thumbs Up
