3.6 or 4.4TDV8?

OK, I am SUPREMELY happy with the 3.6 TDV8 remapped by JE, it is simply amazing to drive, but if you have driven or owned both, when I look to change, is it actually worth paying the current £10K premium to have an 8 sp 4.4 over the 3.6?

I'm not sure JE are remapping the 4.4 yet, but clearly it will be better overall, but the 2010 facelifted 3.6's seem to be the car to go for. Having just done the Alps and back again, you simply can't find a single fault in the 3.6, its just wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Discovery 4 HSE

Haven't driven a remapped one, but a standard 4.4 is a noticeable step forward from a standard 3.6.

Much quicker, more refined, sounds better, a lot more economical, and a 2011 one is quite a bit sharper to drive than the 2008 3.6 was.

A remap on a 4.2? I think you need to change the pulley? Are you sure (sal) that you have a remap?

400bhp doesn't really need a remap, nor does the 5.0 510bhp. However, this thread is about the 3.6 DIESEL.

RRUK - having come from a 510bhp SC - and now driving a remapped 3.6TDV8 - I'm sorry to say I can't tell the difference, apart from more mpg - if anything the gearchange on the TDV8 is smoother Whistle

God I feel like a charlatan, but I'll be honest, the grunt is there, and to be honest we live in the UK - so 70mph is our limit Smile Land Rover Addict

It didn't look like a question sal Smile

My apologies! A remap on the SC will *not* give you better mpg.

I'm much happier with 25mpg around town and 38mpg on the motorway Very Happy Land Rover Addict

RRUK, I have just got the 2010MY 3.6 Vogue se and i am really impressed, having had nothing but Range Rovers for years starting with a P38 4.0, then the 4.6 and then a TD6 i have to say that this one is quick, quiet and smooth and most of the time i really can not belive that i am driving a diesal engine. It standard, not remapped and to behonest i cant see any reason to touch it.

I had a boy racer pull up next to me today and when the lights changed i think he was really shocked when i left him behind. No doubt the 4.4 is even better but then costs a lot more and the 5.0Sc must just be awesome. Current 2010 Vogue SE, Stornoway Grey with Storm Leather,Deployable steps, Vision Pack

The 4.4TDV8 is a massive leap forward in terms of engine technology. I drove a 10MY 3.6TDV8 before the 4.4TDV8 was announced and was impressed with the engine. However, as soon as I drove the 4.4 I knew that it was a much better engine. The second difference in 0-60 (without chipping etc) is noticeable and its 50-75mph acceleration is pretty phenomenal. The 8 speed gearbox is exceptionally smooth for a single-clutch transmission and I think this alone makes a massive difference on fuel economy which, for a 4.4 litre engine, is excellent - it is actually possible to achieve Land Rover's quoted figures. The 4.4 also sounds very nice at higher revs...

Having had my 4.4 TDV8 for 9k miles I can confirm the thoughts of Johnson1. i regularly get 30-35 mpg showing on the dash. The auto box is really good and is always in the right gear even if it seems to by busy changing when pulling away from rest. The ride is significantly better and off road is a real revelation. The electronic stability programme seems to be more 'nannying' than before.

As a previous owner of both 4.2SC and 3.6 TDV8 I made the mistake of driving the 4.4 when I was thinking of changing. I dug deep and made it happen but if a remapped 3.6 saves you ££££s that has to be a factored in for anyone who is thinking about the upgrade.

yet again i have had green oval products all my life and only in the last couple of years swapped over to diesel from petrol.

petrol engines make no sense now when the diesels are so good!!

i have driven all three of the L322 diesels now and each one gets better over its predesessor.

the 3.6 is superb in my opinion and a massive leap over the TD6, but as stated apart from a bit of extra MPG some extra BHP and lower revs due to two extra gears i don't think there is that much between the TDV8's (my opinion of course)

i think the extra money goes into all the new techy stuff fitted to the car.

i have also had my 3.6 tweeked and am getting better figures than a 4.4 produces, so until i can afford one in a couple of years, it's the 3.6 all the way for me... Thumbs Up Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Certainly seems easier to get it flashing going around corners than previously. I think the ride is slightly firmer and busier on the new dampers.

I have put 22,ooo miles on the clock since I got the car last year having had a MY10 RRS 3.6 before that. I had the RRS chipped and it was great no doubt about it but hand on heart it was no match for the 4.4 this engine is even without re-mapping a complete beast and now that it is well and truly run in just gets better and better!!! However I don't think enough praise is made of the 8 speed gearbox which is sublime in it's operation and compliments the engine in every way and is probably the major factor in the improved mpg. For me it has to be the mighty 4.4 no question about it!!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
