Spongy brakes

Gents,

Car was in for MOT and service last week and had the rear brake pipes changed and rear brake calipers taken off and cleaned. Pretty shocking that the pipes corrode after only 5 years on a car like this, but thank god for the MOT Insurance provided with the extended warranty!

Got it back on Friday and the brake pedal is "spongier" and has a lot more travel than it had before. They are still working adequately, but I definitely need more pressure/travel to get the same braking force and can definitely depress to full travel much easier than previously. Can't hear the pump working overtime when i turn the ignition on, and it will still build pressure fine when pumping the pedal and doesn't appear to be leaking.

Is this something that can be expected after changing the pipes and fluid, or having the calipers off, or have they not bled them properly after the work was completed?

Looking for opinions before I get it checked by them and go without a car (again....)

Might be OK - for peace of mind I think I'd bleed them through again - or if you don't know what you are doing with that sort of work - get the garage to do it again.

Air in the system, take it back and tell them to bleed the brakes again

Ask the garage to do a full, controlled flush with new fluid. Brake fluid is highly hygroscopic (sorry for the "Dutch" translation which means "waterloving") and absorbs a lot of moisture from the air that then corrodes the brake system on the inside and can accelerate fading.

The "controlled" flush should push out most of the air if done slowly. It takes up to a few hours but for the long term it is better.

I had my brake fluid changed when the rear calipers (the dreaded S/C issue) were changed out. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Thanks guys, have booked it in to get them to bleed them again FoC.

Would just do it myself, but am flying to the States for two weeks this weekend with work so don't have the time to do it, or the inclination to clean up the mess afterwards!

I'm just hoping to find enough ipad 3's over there to bring back and sell on at a profit to cover the cost of the worlds most expensive rubber stamp (i.e in the service book )!

Can you tell me who you use for your extended warranty? I'm shopping around just now and would appreciate if you could share any thoughts or views on the company you use.

Thanks.

It's a LR warranty taken from the dealer. Car was 4 years old so got 12 months included, and extended for another 12 months for £795, so will have a full warranty up till she's 6 years old.

Been worth every penny so far - had a new A/C compressor, radiator, suspension arm and brake pipes out of it so far, and that's only in the first 12 months!
