Hi all,
Currently on the D3 site as the owner of a 56 plate metropolis, but due to always wanting a RR and not doing as many miles these days, in fact 200 since Xmas. I can now justify splashing out on a RR V8 SC as it will only be used as an occasional car (bmw 1200gs ADV main vehicle for commuting now)

I have seen one at a main LR dealer, 06 plate (I have checked and it was registerd on the 23 March, so high tax band, same as D3) VOGUE SE, 72k miles priced at £17k.

I am not going to rush in so willing to hunt around for a while to make sure I get the right one.

Can anybody help me out with there expericence and let me know if there anything I need to check before purchasing?

quite simply the best thing you will ever do Jamie, its all things to all gentlemen no regrets from me. We dont do that many miles in ours so fuel consumption isnt much of a problem. They just have something that other cars dont have. I looked and waited for about 2 months whilst i found the right one usual sights autotrader pistonheads ebay etc

Its rubbish that they are unreliable (probably going out on a limb here) its just that they have so much more on them than other cars eg air suspension electric and heated everything, the people on this forum are fab for help there is always someone who can help

I owned a 2007MY (updated) SC for two years.....great beast,love it!  If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

many thanks filthyliam, they always say that the more toys you have on the car, the more to go wrong. But atleast with help from the forum you can do most of the jobs yourself or be pointed in the best direction of an Indy who will do it for you.

That is one of the other things that has made up my mind to swop now, need to spend about £2k on the D3 before MOT in Sept or swop it.

I have been sticking to main dealers, but 4.2 SC's are far and few between.

Having had a look on Autotrader I have seen quite a lot, but always worried about not buying from main dealers.

Is this a wise move or am I being too selective?

Possibly too selective , if it's an SC you are after PM Gaz one of our Site sponsors as it is mostly SC's he deals in and he has had some crackers in and they are in stunning condition …

The other half of my dilema is the fact that my d3 needs so much work doing to it, I need to get rid of it but don't want to burden anybody of than a main dealer with it.

I will drop Gaz either a PM or phone call tomorrow and run it past him to see what he says. Obviously any trade in price will reflect the work that is required.

Have had an offer of £14.5k from a main dealer for the D3, but I didn't tell them the full extent of the work required

That is one of the reasons I haven't put it up for sale on the d3 site as wouldn't want anybody to feel that I have sold them a right nacker.

I think the FFRR S/C is the best second hand buy on the market right now. Plus it's almost certainly the best all round car you can get for sub £20k.

However do be aware that the gearbox can apparently be a weak point. The 5HP 24 is known to be a weak point on the older cars, and I think we used to think that the later six speed box was much better, but I'm beginning to think that now they are coming to 5 years plus old, and 100k, they are beginning to fail like their predecessors, certainly that's what the gearbox specialists are saying. Mine's in for a rebuild at the moment.

However I still have no regrets, only thing I'd say is get a good warranty. Make sure it specifically includes wear and tear!  Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

I've got both a D3 and a FFRR... ok both diesels TDV6 and TDV8, not the S/c

My view is that the FF is much plusher and smooooooth, lovely interior, better leather, better fit and finish. No doubt. ....but I miss the quick steering and chuckability of the D3, and the space in the back. The FF seems hard to place accurately, it wanders a bit. The TDV8 is a lot quicker than the D3, and the SC will be more so, but I'm in some doubt that overall it's a better car to drive. Graham
