Gremlins! Known issues or do I call Ghostbusters?

I’m pleased to say that I’ve enjoyed 2 years and near enough 50k miles of trouble free motoring from my Vogue SE (’56 Td6), although I have had experienced some apparently random and intermittent faults. They’ve each happened very rarely and often go away for many, many months, to the extent that I forget all about them. The common theme is that they all seem to be of an electrical nature, but none of them have happened often enough to be a real problem. However, three of the below (1, 3 & 4) occurred in only the last week and I can’t help but feel there must be some common link here. Problem Number 4 is an all new problem, although it’s only happened once (so far!)

Any ideas or suggestions of potential cause(s) of the following would be much appreciated.

1. On turning on the ignition the steering column drops to its lowest position and refuses to go back up. It will normally sort itself after a while, but you need to switch off/on again a couple of times,
2. In the same vein, the suspension stays in access mode. As with the steering column it will sort itself out in the end, but you’re none the wiser about what fixed it!
3. An unseen hand turns down the radio! Return it to its original volume but, after a while, it soon turns itself down again. This will go on for a while and eventually stop and go away.
4. Infotainment system has once been entirely dead on switching on – no splash screen start and no sound. Try turning on and off again to no avail. Give up and drive for a while and it finally boots up of its own accord, some 5/10 minutes later.

And, If I’m not pushing my luck too far in milking the amassed knowledge of everyone out there, how about a rattling noise from left and right of front dash? It sounds like something stuck in the air vents and only seems to appear at around 70+mph.

Due a service next week and might have to give them a long list of extras!

All of this smacks of low battery voltage, a rather well known phenomenon with these cars. Assuming you haven't replaced it in the previous 2 years it would be wise to get it tested. At the same time it's worth inspecting and testing all the various earth straps. I had a loose one which was causing radio interference - go figure.

If it's OK, leaving it disconnected for 30 minutes will reset all the modules in the car, again something which seems to cure a lot of evils on this model. CTRL+ALT+DEL anyone??

If after all the above you still have issues then perhaps get the alternator tested.

Can't help with the rattles, sorry.

I have the windscreen wind noise sometimes. I fastened down the A pillar trims with new clips, which made it better, but has not totally cured it..

I taped black tape on the glass the whole width, on the join to the plastic scuttle, and the problem went away.
I then removed the tape, in order for the car not to look like it was falling apart.

I proved a point, and am told that the plastic scuttle can warp with age, causing wind noise issues, which sound like noise coming through the vents.

Dealer though they were about £40 to buy new, and you'd have to remove the wiper arms to fit it.

Still on my "to do" list.

Tape the scuttle, full width, at the join at the botton of the windscreen, and maybe the bottom of the A pillar trims, and go out for a high speed run.........

Hope this helps.

Thanks both for taking the trouble to respond. I'll get the battery checked out for a start as that sounds a good shout. In fact, now I think about it, I have had a flat battery on two occasions, after leaving an internal light on, so maybe it's not back to full health. I'll definitely try the taped up scuttle experiment as well - I reckon this is along the right lines, as the noise only starts at speed, when the air flow increases.

Cheers

Phil

Made me smile.

I remember in one of my M5's saying to the dealer that I get wind noise from around the drivers mirror - at around 140mph +

Rolling with laughter

They didn't investigate. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Joking aside,

I've just found this thread on the internet ;

Perhaps you don't need a new scuttle after all.

Who can tell us if there has indeed been a service bulletin about it ?

Cheers

Sounds like battery as normally once discharged on Landrovers they never seem to regain their full power. If your battery is 3 years old or more it would be a good investment . I changed to the Bosch Silver Battery with 110AH and 920 CCA and havent had any issues since like a lot of folks on here.

On the scuttle issue I had this on mine and used black windscreen sealant to fill the gap and hold it down . I used some masking tape to ensure none got onto the windscreen. Worked a treat and all quiet since. Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE
