Microphone Quiet and muffled

Right,

in the new RR im getting i was testing the bluetooth connection to my iPhone and tried phoning my sister, all worked and could hear her perfectly, but it wasnt the same for her hearing me.

she said that i was quiet and muffled, and i was wondering if you knew where the microphone is located and if there is a way to put up the gain on it?

I have the same problem, and just decided to live with it, but had a look today to see if I could upgrade as per this topic;

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic9811.html

I opened the panel in the roof behind the sunglass holder expecting to find the mic behind the rectangular grille towards the driver's side - but it was behind the circular grille.

The part in my car (2005 TD6) is a ford part part number 4M5T-19A391-AA LR part number XVC000050

It has 2 wires - red and black leading to a small white connector.

http://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/displayim...;pos=-4313

Apparently you can buy a newer mic part number 8M5T-19A391-AB but it has a higher impedance.

I also wonder whether it's possible to buy the upgraded BMW mic BMW p/n 84-31-6 938-762 which apparently has noise cancelling? It looks like it may have 3 wires and a different connector though?? I'm pretty sure it could be fitted behind the rectangular grille? but not sure how it would hold there as i don't remember seeing any clips.

I have also discovered that if you enter the diagnostics menu in the navigation setup - you can test the mic signal - which looks pretty poor on mine!!

To do this;

enter navigation home screen
touch the middle and centre of the screen and hold for 5 secs (invisible touch button)
you will get a screen asking for a code - enter 753
this will give you various options and one allows you to test the microphone signal in real time (mine only just registers one or two green bars even when speaking loudly in car when stationary and the stereo is off.....

I'm going to post on mjdronfield thread to see if he might shed some more light on this as it sounds like he's had some success with upgrading the mic...

right, first the update to my problem,

ive taken the microphone part out of the overhead housing, and ive opened the casing up, and bour a new microphone to replace the one on there, ive got a mate doing the soldering for me hes taking a while though as the new one is hard to put on,

but in the mean time i bought a brand new mic unit from Range Rover dealer, part number XVC000050 and tried that had the same problem, i asked the dealer if he knew of any problems and he said no but mentioned it could be the bluetooth module that is the problem. but havnt taken this futher yet... waiting to get the mic unit back off my mate.

right in repsonse to your post, i have tried the diagnostics menu, when i had the microphone fitted and could find an option for the microphone level test, which i searched i high and low to look for, its the 2005 model dash screen.

im going to look into the upgraded bluetooth module and might try some of them part numbers see what i can get relatively cheap 2005 RR HSE 2.9 TD6 Auto

Can anyone confirm the full specs of the mic /capsule?

If so I'll see if it can be replaced with a pro manufacturer item from say shure, beyer, sennheiser if this helps anyone.

Hi

What specs do you need dogman?

I don't have any specialist knowledge or tools to test the mic though.

welsh19 - I had the original bluetooth module which i swapped out for the re-programmed one by wiggs. It now works with my phone.

The sound quality for the other party has always been rubbish compared to the phone in my 2003 7-series, so don't know if it's a limitation of some of the other modules in the car - or maybe just that the mic in the BMW was closer to the driver even??!!

Hi

There is a nice bloke on this forum called wiggs (Adrian), who was doing a swap for the bluetooth unit.

Not sure if he is still doing them.

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic9776.html

think there's a longer thread discussing in more detail.

I had a similar problem which I have just resolved.... I found my blackberry automatically enables echo control in the Bluetooth settings for the pairing with the ulf. Thinking that this duplicates the noise cancellation in the microphone, I turned this blackberry setting of and lo and behold, I am louder to listeners!
