06 onwards models have a huge amount of sound deadening inside interia panels... Go to a breakers yard?

Nice one Craig, I will head down to one to see what I can find.

Surely there is the factory insulation? You'll be hard pressed to squeeze any more in? Discovery 4 HSE

Plenty of room on top of the engine in a TD6, you could put in quite a thick layer of absorbent material full width which could be lifted out for maintenance. |

Yep the TD6 has a lot of space in there, I could almost put in a whole duvet!

It might be worth asking Duckworths Dan what the price is for the pukka 06 insulation/ rubber seals - I wondered if it was worth adding any more sound insulation, but the effort of removing the dashboard was too much to make it worthwhile! |

I'll see if Dan has any info. It is more the insulation that quietens the car to outside that interests me, the insulation to the cabin is amazing already. I don't like waking up all my neighbours every time I start the car, so any improvement on the insulation is a bonus. I know it will never be that quiet, but the new diesels seem almost as quiet as the petrol versions. Tom

It seems to me that most of the noise is coming from that whopping great 9 blade fan, not the engine. When I next have a play under the bonnet, I'm going to whip the fan out and take it for a quick run around the block to measure the difference in noise level - I think it would be quite noticable.

The fan should only make a noise when the engine is hot, could be the viscous coupling is kaput |

The sound deadening material I used from the 06 model was all inside the car, behind panels etc etc... Sorry for any confusion...

No - it works fine, and does exactly the same thing as the brand new one on my Classic (That was stuffed until I replaced it.). First thing in the morning, roars for 30 seconds or so as the car takes off, then quietens down a bit. On a hot day (35 degrees +) in traffic, it roars as it starts to lock up - as it should - as it gets hotter, but apart from that, spins around minding its own buisness, but they still do turn, and they still do make a noise - just not as much as when it is hot... |

My interest is in trying to deaden the normal diesel clatter noise. The bonnet has the stock factory fitted padding on the inside but I was wondering if the newer models have a thicker padding here and any other engine bay deadening rubber seals, covers etc that can be retrofitted.
