In the last few day on starting the RR in the cold it starts and then stalls almost immediately. Usually a second start is ok but today it took three attempts and a good dose of the throttle to keep it from stalling. Has anybody experienced this before? It starts fine when warmed up, i am thinking maybe the coolant temp sensor however the gauge works fine or maybe the air intake temperature sensor? Any opinions would be most appreciated.

Mine has started doing this in the recent cold too, but it seems to be intermittent. I am having my thermostat changed next week as this has died and have been wondering if the two problems are linked. So will see after the thermostat is changed on Monday whether the starting issue still occurs.

A faulty coolant temperature sensor (CTS) won't affect the reading on the gauge, its function is to monitor the temperature of the engine and feed the correct amount of fuel required dependent on the coolant temperature. When they go faulty they usually over fuel giving a rich mixture. Might be worth having the car plugged into a computer to see if there are any fault codes

Are you wanting for the glow plugs before starting? Next time it's really cold switch on the ignition to position 2 and put your seatbelt on before starting the car... In the 10 seconds or so it takes you to belt up the glow plugs should have a better chance of starting it...

When I read this post at first I initially thought glowplugs, but checked the op's car and saw it was a Supercharged.

Thanks for your help so far, and an update of this morning's investigations.
I have an ODB interface and plugged that in and no fault codes were present. I checked the live data before starting and it showed a coolant temperature of -3, air intake temperature of -4 which is about correct as the temp on the dash read -5. I am now thinking that rules out the coolant temperature sensor and air intake sensor as they were showing a correct reading and also when the car was started and warmed up or does the OBD data for the coolant come from another sensor, maybe the same one that feeds the dash gauge? I was hoping this would be as easy as a dodgy coolant sensor but maybe not now. MY2007 S/C - Stornoway / Jet

Sorry i was using my iPad this morning and i cannot look at your car details...

Something to quickly check, does your car self start, meaning when you turn your key to engage the starter motor does it keep cranking till it starts? Pop your keys in the ignition and flick the key over to the starter and then let go and see if it keeps cranking. I read somewhere if it does not then it can signify an issue...

This only works on SC models as they are controlled by atarter button in some Jag models...

Yes it does self start and starts ok every time but as the revs decrease down to idle they don't stop at idle but continue to fall all the way to nothing. At that point the engine will either stall which is most common or will just manage to recover to a normal or slightly high idle speed. After that all will be fine even if I restart very shortly afterwards. MY2007 S/C - Stornoway / Jet

Hmmmm baffling... I would look at MAF? air leaks etc etc... Sorry i cant help further...

Indeed I did

It should now be a known issue to the dealers that affects the SC. You need a software update to the power control ecu to fix it.

If your dealer can't identify the TSB, send me a PM and I will PM you my chassis number, which hopefully the dealer can use to trace the right fix.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.....my SC has always tended to drop the revs and then recover itself. It stalled a few times this (cold) morning though.

Does anyone know the TSB reference for the power control ECU upgrade please?  2006 4.2 SC
