A serious question which has been rolling around in my own mind for a while, brought on here by an article in one of the monthly mags. See, the time was when I first clapped eyes on the Range Rover, I was nowt but a wee boy but mightily impressed by the then brand new RR classic. I coveted these all my life until I bought my first one, a Classic 4.2 LSE in 1996. Several Rangies later and, well.........

I think you sort of have a point, but it applies to a lot of cars really. I think if you had a Bentley, Porsche, or Mercedes, you could encounter similar issues.

You get different problems depending on the car from my own experience.

Mmm.. Me thinks it has nothing to do with the cars and more to do with the sad, jealous scum that make up part of the great British public... If you offered a FFRR to the toe rag that was about to key your car, would he turn it down? I don't think so.. Previously..

Jealousy and misguided righteousness seem to be on the rise in Europe. Sad to hear that it is getting worse over there. Now if it is just the feelings of people it would be fine but acting out on the cars or the owners is unacceptable. Most people driving these cars have worked hard to afford them and are working hard to drive them (I know I am and I think it is the same for most if not all on here). So are we now forced to buy a dull piece of crap like todays hybrids of which the environmental "benefits" are still a bit vague.

Our 03 v8 is probably worth second hand ford focus money, (130k on the clock), but when we tell friends what we paid for it they stare in disbelief. At the end of the day, people still see a Ffrr and assume you blew £80,000 last week.

Nail > head. I had a rather heated discussion with one of my customers relatives one day, he was questioning some of our rates we charge for work, (alarms, cctv, electrical etc) As I'd explained them, he then pipes up with, well, what do you drive then, I bet it's something flash with the money you charge for work? At the time, I had just bought the Merc and the RR was due to be collected by the new owner in a couple of days. Without hesitation, "oh, well you must be charging way too much if you can afford gas guzzling show off cars like that" After explaining that my choice of car has nothing to do with how good or bad our business is doing and the only vehicle that should matter is the van, he still went on and on about how I must have blown about $50k on both cars. He then told me how he drives a 15 year old Mazda 626, but then started going on about the 3 cruises he goes on every year with his Mrs. Trying to get it through to him that his daughter had paid more for er C4 Picasso than I probably did for the Merc and RR, and the money he spends on those 3 cruises would have bought the Merc outright, he backed down a bit. That's probably the only time I've been in that situation where someone's shown what seemed to me like jealousy without knowing what the true value of the cars are/were. I have to say though, on the road, this CLS seems to get respect from people more than I thought it would, I was expecting to have people not flash me out at junctions and the likes, but people seem to think it's just another car and not, "look at that knob is his flashy car" 2006 Mercedes CLS 1991 Retro-style Mini But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C... |
