Hi,

I'm after some new tyres & have had great experiences with the General Grabber AT.

Question is I currently have 255/50/20 tyres on & can only get the Grabbers on 275/40/20 which is a RRS size.

Will it matter & what effects will it have - e.g rubbing on full lock?

Failing that, what's the best alternative to the GG AT on 255/50/20?

OK, done a search & have kind of ruled out the 275's as they won't look right due to the 40 profile.

Where does that leave me for choice - Michelin, Pirelli or Conti's? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Have a look at Cooper Zeon tyres. There are one or 2 threads here with people who have them fitted. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

There is lots of tyre threads on here. There is also lots of tyres available. Thus, there are lots of opinions. What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for everyone.

My very much personal opinion is that when I've bought a car which has had so called premium brand name tyres on it ( Dunlop, Pirelli, Continental whatever ) , I've never felt that they've been good enough to command the significantly higher price compared to a similar mid-range make ( such as kumho ) when its come to the time to replace them. I am a fan of Kumho tyres personally. Never really let me down in a number of different sizes and vehicles I've had them fitted on. I was also impressed by a set of Accelera tyres I had fitted to my passat once ... I'd even consider them. I do appreciate that some people cant see past a premium brand name.

Be realistic on what you're going to be using the RR for. Do you need the AT aspect of the tyres? Do you ever go off road atall? If not, and its only ever on the road, then there are plenty of more road orientated tyres around. the RR will do pretty well on just about most surfaces on road tyres.


255/50R20 - Original
265/50R20 - Fit perfectly well
275/50R20 - Should fit, but will be close to struts
285/50R20 - Wide, may need spacers on front if original style alloys
275/55R20 - Significantly larger - As large as the RR will be able to take without mods.

If you have a reasonable garage nearby, then dont rule out these online places for tyres, where you can order online and get them fitted at one of their garages. Comes searching about should find you tyres to look for.

edit: For completeness:

I currently have fitted 275/55 R20 Cooper Zeon LTZ for the winter months.

I have sitting the garage a set of 265/50 R20 kumho tyres for the summer ( just need to find some alloys ).
The Kumho tyres are split between 2 models:

KL12 STX - The common v-shape pattern. Always been a good tyre in the wet for me across sa number of land rovers I've had , although in this size the shoulders seemed to wear very quickly. Less impressed this time round for that. These 2 need replaced as they are just about worn out.

KL21 SOLUS - A relatively new 'eco' tyre. Initially they weren't what I ordered, but having fitted them, I've been very impressed and pleased with them. Am now considering getting another 2 to make a complete set of 4 for the summer months. V8 or else ...

Agree with above post. I used to have 20" wheels and noticed not a great deal of choice. Loads more available for 18" or 19" wheels. Was an easy choice for me, got a full set of new 19" wheels and tyres for the price of a set of tyres for my 20" wheels. Plus the bonus of a comfier ride.  No longer FF owner but still interested. Agreed, which is why I went for 265/50 R20 at the time, there was more choice for minimal difference. V8 or else ...

I have thought of downsizing to 19" but obviously keeping the 20's as well.

Any insurance implications there as the car was supplied with 20's? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Well LR supply vehicles with 19's and 20's can't see it being an insurance issue if you put on 19's as long as they are LR OEM

if you did do a claim it would take a very informative insurance assessor to spot the change from 20'' to 19'' or even 18''..but, like mick says as long as they are landrover OE then i dont see any problems.. ... - .- -.

Instead of guessing why not ring your insurance company and ask them the question? I find ours most approachable and helpful when I ask technical questions... Then I'm 100% covered 100% guaranteed... Simples...
