Council Tax help

Ive just purchased our new house on the 13th Jan. we're not living there as it needs a lot of work and don't see us moving in till April. The house has been empty for some time as the previous owner had died and it had to go through probate etc. I contacted the council today to notify them of the new ownership and they have informed me that I will have to pay the tax till from this date. When asked about being excempt due to not living there they said I won't, get that benefit as its been empty for so long!
I don't mind paying my rates when I'm getting something for it but, in this case I'm obviously not, so it's Censored me off! Anyone have any ideas advice on this matter? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

I was under the impression that you got a discounted rate on the Council Tax if you don't occupy the property. When we moved from a rented house into our new one there was an 'overlap period' so I told the council that the rental property would be empty and they promptly refunded me the council tax that had been paid for that period.

Makes a change for the council to pay something back so I was happy.

Rob,
you need tell them that you are unable to move in due to refurbishment/building work. Ask for a VXA form and they can give you up to a year of free council tax.

We do this a lot for clients

That sounds good. Does it matter that the house has been unoccupied for about 1-2years previous? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

So how's your country going to thrive without any tax ? I'm baffled as to how that's gonna work as I'm sure that means we will no longer be footing the bill for your university fees your health care etc etc
How are you guys gonna pay for all that without income tax ?
I'm not doubting what you say just thinking if that's the case you will end up paying for it in other areas where they do tax you "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

The fact that the property has been empty for 1-2 years adds to your case as it definitely needs work doing to it.
Ask them for the form - it's an easy one to fill out. Send it in with any plans, builders quotes, photos etc.
The 3 councils that I deal with are all really good about it. 5.0 supercharged autobiography

Think of all the money we will make charging a tenner a pop for every Englishman crossing the borders into Scotland, whisky will be a fiver a bottle for Scots and £50 for the rest of the world....I can see this working rather well.

Now where is my bumper sticker Thumbs Up
