Breakdown requiring recovery caused by component failure?

Has anyone suffered a roadside breakdown requiring recovery caused by a component failure?
The reason for asking is that warranty direct offered me a package for £104 which covered most everything but had to require the component to fail requiring the vehicle to be recovered.

My last one was recovered twice.

First time was an alternator failure which actually happened in the drive but I had to drive it to the indy and it only got half way there.

Second time was a front nearside airbag which resulted in susp fail, could drive short distances but as I was towing got recovered.

I took out that warranty with them... £80 I paid last October. I'd haggle a bit! Thought it was good to have just in case a major part went, ie gearbox, alternator etc... Yes it only comes into effect after you have broken down, but the parts list it covers is pretty comprehensive. For £80 it is peace of mind. Previously..

Surely just about every mechanical breakdown would be a component failure - whether that component is a (eg) piston leading to total engine failure or a torque converter...

If it can be fixed at the roadside and doesn't need recovering than it's probably not an expensive part - I know, in theory you could change a gearbox at the side of the road, you'd have to a find a pretty keen AA man who would actually do it.

I reckon it sounds like decent value - haggle the price down a bit though - I bet they'll drop at least a tenner.

Can you add a third option to your poll, cos I've never had a breakdown in 3 years of ownership (apart from a flat battery which was my fault). 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Voted: SC coolant hose, and 2x rear calipers.

@Noddy- need to keep that, either that or put it on a pedestal in the LR museum!

It would appear that out of all the members that have read this thread only a handful have actually been recovered following a breakdown.
None too shabby, i'll save me £100 and put it towards a bigger inevitable bill.

Thanks for those that took a minute to participate Thumbs Up

My reasons - transmission died and locked up (on my doorstep, but recovered to LR). (L322) and Alternator died (P38A) Middle lane in middle of three lane roundabout with traffic lights during rush hour. Waited 20 minutes before someone stopped to tow me off Embarassed .
