OK the Brightness setting on the secret menu has made a huge difference to the video output on the main screen. I turned it up to 10 and it is almost too bright now. So problem solved, and methinks last piece in my carpc puzzle (apart from writing my own big button front end ) Amazed no FFRR owners had related this secret menu before, well, that I could find.

the firmware upgrade was on the mk4 nav unit, it gives you 3d maps,speed cameras and a few other bits V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

A nice little modern tablet is the Kogan sold on ebay, nice solid build from Oz.
