Which Merc - Buying advise please

Hi Guys,

Looking to sell both my cars (RR and BMW) and purchase the one car which is slightly more economical to run with the same class as the RR.

I would reallly like an s class however within my budget i can only really get millage near 80k is this a worry for a w221. Find an example below I have seen.

I think the e3280/e320 cdi is a great car too and was wondering which one you would get if you had a budget of 15k

Significant millage difference

My money would probably go on the first one out of the two. I keep looking at newer Mercs Reformed

I'd take the S Class any day. Superb value. Seems too cheap.... Graham

E class, but find an estate, you will miss the Range Rover's boot!

So it has to be the S Class. E Class is a pale shadow. Graham

Haha. Thanks for the reply guys. Wow the e class doesn't even have a shout it.

I did consider the Audi a8 and I still am but I seemed tO have all of a sudden taken a strong preference to a Mercedes.

It seems v good value for money however I have seen 5 or 6 in this price bracket at this millage and a hell of a lot more millage. E.g 120k plus.

Does anyone have have any experience of s class ownership? Any issues things to watch for at this millage.

Oh and the cls. For almost two years this was my dream merc. A timeless classic design. I loved it and I still do however I went over the weekend to see one and the rear seats are rather cramped as expected which would never have put me off before however much of the time my dad sits in the back as he finds it more relaxing when I am driving hence this was cut off the list. Maybe one day a cls63 Twisted Evil

The other point of a big boot is an excellent one. I am so used to filling things up I'm the rr and going 400 miles south with 4 people that I think I would seriously miss this if I didnt have it. However even though the shape of the space in an s class or a8 are different they are still very large.

My FIL owned a top of the line e320 with almost every option ticked.

He drove it about 20k in 5 yrs of ownership from new. It's last service before he part ex'd cost him £2.5k!!!

It was already starting to how rust on the front subframe as well, do get it up on a lift and check, his spent any time not on the road in his garage so rarely touched rain, it got wet mostly from his 2weekly wash of it lol

As above go for an estate E if you can, you'll miss the space and they are easier to move on when you want to come back to the fold Very Happy

Shocked Shocked Shocked 2.5k service for an e class and already showing rust. Id say thats quite shocking, only reason I like the car is because my friends brother had one and I was with him for a day in it on a road trip and I read liked the car for what it could do. smooth and comfortable and a generally nice place to be. Do the S class's suffer from the same rust issue or any others ?

I have to say the E class Estate is a handsome car with the rare AMG packs you can find on that model which I beleive is the W211

I'm not sure if the S class would suffer but don't get me wrong, inside it was a lovely car, and the car that brought my bride to the wedding(albiet she made it 15minutes late!) and then it took us onto the reception.

It was used 1-2 times a year in the summer to go on holiday to cornwall with 4 of them and their kit in it (1 in a child/baby seat) and back and usually sat at 80-90 leptons in comfort. The mrs has said the only thing better for long distance was my older citroens and the ffrr. albiet the citroens werent as sumptious inside as the merc but the ride is great Very Happy

Check behind the front wing lips and the rear arch lips to see if its bubbling, FFRR are already doing it Big Cry

I have to say I have great things about the comfort of a citroen but it just does nothing for me. I have mostly heard good things about the s class mainly being it is bullet proof if looked after. have heard of a few oddballs where the turbo has went at 80k but only twice over many hours of searching on the net and even that was considered very abnormal.

love the interior of the s class, I have not have the pleasure of driving one yet. something for the weekend.

Hi Googsy,

I know this sounds really odd but having had the bmw for almost 2.5 years (purchased new) i just feel like being in a different card. In a way thats why I am put off buying an Audi a8 because somewhere in the near future I have my heart set on an audi a7 and I dont want to get it thinking hmmm almost the same.

I have had an audi a3, m3 evo, 318i m sport lci now and a merc c class from 2003 year but i just like to experience a new place when i change cars. Right now id like to go back to merc and people are right there is a world of difference in the e and s and do doubt the 7 is a gorgeous car but does look dated compared to the new one and cars of the same period, e.g. the s class. Smile

probably just my personal choice right now Thumbs Up
